Emily Dickinson is born
Emily Elizabeth Dickinson was born on december 10th 1830. She was the second of three children; her brother Austin being the first and her sister Laviana being the last. -
Laviana Born
Laviana Dickinson, Emily's sister, was one of the most helpful and close people to Dickinson. They were always together in school and rarely went somewhere if the other couldn't go. -
Sophia's Death
In April of 1844, Emily's second cousin Sophia Holland died from Typhus. This seriously affected Emily; causing her to become completely strange. She quoted that if she couldn't see Sophia, then why was she alive. She was sent home to recover from this ill state in which she was in. -
Emily meets Newton
In 1848, Emily's father met and became friends with a man named Benjamin Franklin Newton. Newton introduced Dickinson to some of the greatest poetry of their time: like William Wordsworth and Ralph Emerson. Dickinson later refered to him as my master and tutor. -
Susan marries Austin
In 1856, Emily's brother Austin married her best friend at the time Susan Gilbert. Although their wedding was not a happy one, they still loved each other sincerely. -
The beginning of the White clothing
In early 1866, Dickinson began to start wearing white clothing. she also began to have a reluctance to greet guests and was rarely seen: only if she needed food and if .o she was always wearing white. At this time she also stopped having face to face conversations -
Edward's Death
On June 16th 1874, Emily's father Edward died. He was travleing to Boston when he caught a stroke and died soon after. Emily did not attend the funeral on June 28th: instead she kept her door open a crack for the day instead of having it completely shut. -
Emily Dickinson's Death
On May 15th 1886, Emily Elizabeth Dickinson died. She had been years old and her symptoms from a year earlier had gotten too bad. -
First Book of Poems Published
In early November, the random journals that Laviana had not burned of Dickinson's poetry was turned into a book. It had 115 of her around 1800 original poems in it. It was edited jointly by Mabel Loomis Todd and T. W Higginson. -
Manuscript Published
In 1981 the Manuscript books of Emily Dickinson was published. Using evidence, the poems were supposed to be in their original order. -
Dickinson Museum opens!
In 2003 her college, Amherst college, had been boughten and made into an Emily Dickinson museum. Some of the things on display include a lock of her hair and many letters she had written.
