    Doctor creats Cob Pipe

Though Missouri Meerschaum (see corncobpipe.com) might disagree, others contend that in the latter half of the 19th century, Dr. Wilson Carr, who lived on 520 South Main Street, St. Charles, succeeded in crafting a pipe out of cob- corn cob. Carr never took a patent out on his pipe, and it wasn't long until he had competition on 2nd and Clark Street, as well as 2nd and Jefferson (a regular St. Charles pipe factory capitalism "gold rush").

The St. Charles Cob Pipe Company buys the Old Mill on South Main Street, St. Charles (near where Trailhead Brewery is now). The factory made nearly 2,567,000 pipes per year. The pipes were made by 48 workmen, who sometimes collected cobs from children, paying them 5 cents (called "candy money") per wagon.
