Jayden

  • 8 months

    8 months
At 8 months old I tried the object permanence test with Jayden and he did very well. He even showed the A-not-B error after I had moved the object. The object permanence test is hiding something in the same place so the baby finds it over and over again. Moving the object and the baby continues to look in the same place is called the a-not-b error. (pp150) Jayden would look in the old hiding places and be very confused when the object was not there anymore.
  • Around Age 2

    Around Age 2
A couple months before age 2 Jayden was demonstrating gender identity. Jayden started playing with more boy directed toys. He started to prefer hanging out with boys, but he still got along well with girls. Gender Identity happens between 18 and 30 months of age when children first identify themselves and others as female and male.(pp204) Also at this age Jayden is potty trained which is pretty advanced considering only 60% of children are trained by their third birthday.(pp183)

Jayden reacted to a new baby in the house like most children would react to getting a younger sibling. In the text book on page 218 it states that todler's attachment to their mothers change from secure to insecure with the birth of a new child. This change in attachment was obvious with jayden when he started to become more demanding, whiny, less cooperative and enjoyed taking part in acting like a baby.
  • Age 4

    Age 4
At age 4 Jayden was noticing a more clear definition for gender roles. Jayden would state that boy should not dress up or play with dolls and girls should not be firefighters or police officers. Gender roles are cultural expectations for appearance and behavior specific to males and females. (pp 257) I tried to tell Jayden that it was okay for genders to play either role since we saw a woman police officer.
  • Age 6

    Age 6
At age 6 Jayden broke his arm. Jayden fell off a tree while playing at school. According to the text book on page 235, boys are more likely than girls to become injured in early childhood because their play tends to be rougher and more physcially active. Reading that made me not as concerned about the broken arm.

    age 8
At age 8 Jayden starts to display some selective association. Jayden has one friend who plays on his baseball team and seems to be free quite a bit so it works out with Jayden's schedule. Selective association is the principle that people tend to prefer being around others who are like themselves.(pp 319) Jayden and this friend both like baseball and of course being boys they both like playing video games. It's a good friend for Jayden.
  • age 10

    age 10
At age 10 Jayden showed his developing self-concept. Jayden was getting ready to make the transition into middle school and had said that he was worried about being a "scrub". Self concept is a person's perception and evaluation of themself. (pp 311) Jayden was evaluating how he dressed to resemble how a "scrub" would dress and was nervous people wouldn't like him or would judge him for it.
  • Age 12

    Age 12
Jayden and his friend were talking about some social network pages they had one day. When I looked at them I noticed they had some false information on there such as age. Also they had their real names and email adresses. I adressed the subject to Jayden and told him to take off personal information off the page. On page 329 of the text it states that light media use is generally harmless. So I simply limited his use of the computer to avoid any further complications.
  • age 14

    age 14
At age 14 Jayden demonstrated adolescent egocentrism when he had a long conversation with a kid on the bus who he was discussing various different religous and political views. Jayden took into account what the other boy was saying but then thought later that he disagreed with what the boy thought. Adolescent egocentrism is when adolscents may have difficulty distinguishing their thoughts from the thoughts of others. (pp 359)
  • Age 16

    Age 16
At age 16 Jayden had a girlfriend for 2 months and he was very certain they were in love. I had my partner sit down and talk with him about what love really is and to think through any sexual relations they may plan on doing. I also had him inform Jayden on the various forms of birth control out there since United States has the highest rates of teen pregnancy throughout all developed countries. (pp 380)
