    Gempei War

    Gempei War
    This war was a multiple conflicts between the Taria and Minamoto clans. This dispute started because of succession of the throne in which the two clans had two different canidates. This huge conflict lasted five years and resulted in the fall of the Taria clan.

    Ashikaga Takauji rules

    Ashikaga Takauji rules
    He was the founder and first shogun of the Ashikaga shogunate. Ashikaga captured Kyoto in Feb. 1336. Onl;y to be driven out a few days later by the arrvial of Prince Takanaga. Him and his brother were forced to move west. But by May he was able to advance towards Kyoto again. At the Battle of Minatogawa he defeated Yoshisada and was able to seize Kyoto for good. Ashikaga ended up dying in 1358.

    In 1542 Portugese traders and Jesuit Missionaries introduced firearms and Christiantity to Japan. Despite the Buddhist opposition, they welcomed Chirstianity because they were keen in trade with over sea nations. Mainly for military reasons.

    Oda Nobunaga rules
    Oda Nobunaga was an important founder of Japan. He controlled all of Owari by 1560 and defeated a neighboring ruler. In his time he unified all of Japan under the rule of shogun. He died on June 21, 1582
  • Japan gives ultimatum to Germany

    Japan gives ultimatum to Germany
    After Japan joined WWI they started demanding removal of all German ships from Japanese and Chinese waters. They also demanded the surrender of Tsingtao, the largest German naval base. When Germany didn't respond to this Japan declared war. With Britain giving two battalions to Japan, Tsingtao was finally surrendered on November 7th.
  • Tripartite Pact

    Tripartite Pact
    Japan renounced the the Anti-Comintern Pact (which later turned into the Tripartite Pact) which pledged Germany, Italy and Japan "to assist one another with all political, economic and military means." In 1940 they recognized Japan as the leader of a new order in Asia.
  • Attack on Pearl Harbor

    Attack on Pearl Harbor
    During WWII hundreds of Japanese fighter planes attacked the naval base near Honolulu, Hawaii. The whole thing lasted two hours, the Japanese managed to destroy 20 American vessels and more than 2,000 American soldiers died during the fight. The day after Franklin D. Roosevelt declared war on Japan.

    This horrific bombing happened during World War II because the U.S. deployed an atomic bomb over Hiroshima (a big city in Japan.) The bomb wiped out 90% of the city and immediatly killed 80,000 people. Thousands more died from rediation exposure. Although three days later another one was dropped killing another 40,000 people.

     The economy enters a severe recession
    Japan's economy took a huge fall in 1997 because of, the total value of the nation's services and goods. It dropped at a rate of 0.4%. There was also a huge fall in the demand for trademark Japanese products.
  • Tokyo sends troops to Iraq

    Tokyo sends troops to Iraq
    The Japanese parliament voted to send up to 1,000 troops to join the U.S. in Iraq. Although the Japanese troops were sent to "non-combat" zones. They went home a few years later.
