  • Tokugawa Shogunate

    Also known as the Edo Period- The Tokugawa Shogunate was a feudal military dictatorship in Japan that lasted for almost three hundred years, from 1603 to 1868.
  • Commodore Matthew Perry

    Matthew Calbraith Perry was a sailor in the United States Navy , diplomat, naval reformer, and advocate of the steam navy for 42 years. He journied to China to restock the US's coal supply and trade.
  • Meiji Restoration

    A political Revolution in Japan that brought back direct imperial rule eof the country to Meiji. Led by young samurai men that were against foreigners.
  • Japanese Territorial Expansiona

    Russia took over the Manchuria Territory. The process itself was rather ineffective and allowed Japan to realize how challenging it is to over throw China. Japan actually lost territory.
  • Great Depression

    Japan's economy shrunk 8%, however the results weren't too severe. Japan took advantage of Britains economy, and Japan's political parties increased.
  • Hiroshima

    Japan was atomically bombed with uranium at Hiroshima killing 70,000 thousand immediately and 70,000 due to injuries. It put an immediate end to the war and forced Japan to surrender without fighting.
  • Economic Miracle of Japan

    After WWII Japans economy boasted like crazy due to the cooperation of manufacturers, suppliers, distributors, and banks in closely knit groups called keiretsu.
  • Postwar Reforms

    A factor in the democratization of Japan after World War II, Japanese leaders and Occupation authorities worked together to carry out land reform. Most successful of the Occupation-era reforms, a model for land reform in other countries. Land reforms purpose was to reduce the gap between absentee landlords who owned agricultural land but did not farm it themselves, and tenant farmers who rented the land in exchange for giving the landlord a payment.
  • Tsunami of 2011

    A 9.0 Magnitude earthquake sturck Japan hard leaveing waves up to 40.5 meters high. The disaster caused nuclear accidents and level 7 meltdowns at nuclear plants in Japan. 15,854 people died and 26,000 were injured.
  • Japanese Feudalism (esp. samurai warriors)

    Japanese Feudalism was dominated by the samurai warriors, even though they only made up 10% of the population of Japan at the time. Because of Japanese Feudalism citzens of Japan developed nationalisn.
