    In the 1950’s the main type of music was jazz, blues and rock and roll. Two of the most famous singers of that time were Elvis and Fats Domino. When Elvis started his singing career he became an overnight sensation. He became known as the king of rock and roll. Some of his famous songs were Heartbreak Hotel, Love Me Tender and Hound Dog. Heartbreak Hotel was the #1 best -selling single of 1956. Love Me Tender became a gold record before it was even released.

    Fats Domino was another well- known artist of this decade. Fats Domino first song was call The Fat Man and was an early rock and roll song. His biggest hit was called Blueberry Hill and was #1 on the r & b chart for 11 weeks.

Rock music changed throughout this decade and created new types of rock such as folk rock, progressive rock and psychedelic rock. There was also the British invasion of bands from England. The Beatles and Rolling Stones were two of these bands. The Beatles gave us songs such as Yellow Submarine and Can’t Buy Me Love. Chubby Checker was another artist popular in the 1960s.

    In the 1970s, various types of pop music dominated the charts. New types of music started in New York City during this decade. Hip Hop, Punk Rock, Salsa, Techno as well as disco were invented in the 70s in New York. Led Zeppelin, the Eagles, Kiss and the Rolling Stones were very popular bands during this time. Stairway to Heaven was and still is the most famous Led Zeppelin song. The Eagles had numerous hits off of their Hotel California album, such as New Kid in Town.

    The 1990s introduced us to grunge music and alternative rock, with bands like Green Day, Pearl Jam and Nirvana. Good Riddance/Time of Your Life was a popular Green Day song. Even Flow was a popular Pearl Jam song, and All Apologies was a song by Nirvana. Hip Hop continued to rise with people like Snoop Dogg, Tupac and Notorious B.I.G. Dr. Dre created a foundation for gangsta rap.

Eminem is best known for being one of the few successful white rappers in the music industry today.
