  • 1950s

    Rock and roll was the main music of the 1950s, and was the merger of several styles of popular music. The two most important of these styles were black rhythm and blues and white country music. Rock and roll was a powerful new form of music that combined elements of different music to create a sound that truly shook America. Two of the most popular artist of this decade was Elvis Presley and Johnny Ray. Johnny Ray’s most popular song was “Cry” and Elvis Presley’s most famous song was “Hounddog”
  • 1960s

    The 1960s saw a real flowering of popular music styles. Unlike the 1950s, in which the birth of rock and roll dominated the decade, jazz, pop, and folk music all gathered devoted listeners in the 1960s. Folk music was reborn in 1960s. The two most popular bands of the 1960s were The Beatles and The Doors. The Beatles are considered one of the best bands of all time, and in the 1960s their most popular song was “Come Together”. The Doors most popular song was “Touch Me”.

    The 1970s saw the rise of experimental classical music. Funk, disco, art rock, progressive rock, hard rock, glam rock, and punk music were popular in this time of music. Two of the most popular artist were Stevie Wonder and Led Zeppelin. Their popular songs in the 70s were "Stairway to Heaven" by Led Zepplin and "Superstition" by Stevie Wonder.

    In the early 80s it was disco that was most popular . The rest of the 80s was dominated by hard rock, glam rock, and hairbands, but the 80s were more than rock. The 80s was an era of pop music. Two of the most popular artist were Michael Jackson and Prince. Michael Jackson's most famous album in the 80s was " Off the Wall" , and Prince's most famous album of the 80s was "1999".

    The 90s saw the continuation of teen pop from the 1980s. Two of the most popular artist if this time were Britney Spears with her top selling album of this decade, "Baby One More Time", and Nirvana with his album , " Smells Like Teen Spirit" .

    The 2000s is the beginning of a new time period , and continued pop and country. Two of the most popular artist were Mariah Carey with her number one song ," We Belong Together", and Usher with his popular song , "Yeah!".
  • 2010

    This is the most modern decade of music of all. It still has pop, country, and R&B as its music genre. Popular artist of this time include: Eminem, Drake, Lady GaGa, Justin Bieber, Adele, and Rihanna. Two of the most popular songs of this decade are, "Someone Like You", by Adele and "Lighters" by Eminem.
