    The company received a new royal charter which changed its President to a Governor. Sir Thomas Gates became the first Governor.

    Starving Time
    The winter of 1609 became known as the Starving Time. From the Autumn of 1609 to the Spring of 1610 more than 4/5 of the colonists died from starvation and harsh conditions.
  • John Rolfe and Tobacco

    John Rolfe and Tobacco
    John Rolfe was a planter and began experimenting with growing tobacco. After sending it back to England, it quickly changed the colony.

    This was the first introduction of representative government and allowed colonists to vote for their representatives.
