    Jack Trice's 2nd game of his college career. Iowa state is playing the Minnesota Gophers. Jack is playing so hard that he breaks his collarbone on the second play of the game. He insist multiple times that he is fine and keeps playing. The Gophers take the lead at first, but Iowa State ties the game by halftime.

    Jack realizes that he will have to try a roll block, a dangerous move. He does the move and gets hurt and, despite his decision, gets taken out of the game.

    Jack Trice died 2 days later from a hemorrhaged lungs and internal bleeding as a result of the injuries during the game. His funeral was held 8 days later.

    The day before the game Trice took out a pen and wrote on a hotel notpad. This note was found in his pocket and was read during his funeral, it is as follows,

    "My thoughts just before the first real college game of my life: The honor of my race, family & self is at stake. Everyone is expecting me to do big things. I will. My whole body and soul are to be thrown recklessly about the field tomorrow. Every time the ball is snapped, I will be trying to do more than my part."

    "On all defensive plays I must break through the opponents' line and stop the play in their territory. Beware of mass interference. Fight low, with your eyes open and toward the play. Watch out for crossbucks and reverse end runs. Be on your toes every minute if you expect to make good. Jack."
