Interwar Period Timeline

  • European Democratic Governments

    Many citizens had little experience with a representative government and the large number of political parties made effective government difficult. There were also multiple changes in the government making it hard to have long term goals, creating a bigger problem in a time of need. This then caused voters in some countries wanting to sacrifice their government for a authoritarian leadership.
  • Inflation in Germany

    Because of the great amount of money that Germany was to pay for the war, Germany started just priniting money. This then caused inflation making their mney close to nothing.
  • Hitler Takes Charge

    When Hitler became in contol of the Nazi party, he slowly took over the rest of Germany as well. He was harsh to those who were not German and called the Treaty of Versallies an outrage, trying to win back land and jobs for the German people.
  • Economy Troubles in the US

    Since the income for the majority of families per year was only $2,000, there were not many people left to by goods from factories. This then caused the factories to produce more and force factories to law off more and more people.
  • The Stock Marcket Crahes

    When the stock marcket crashed in October of 1929, bussinesses failed and banks closed as well as farmers loosing their land. Around 9 million people lost their savings and soon American bankers demanded payments from their oversea's loans and withdrew money from Europe. Becauses of this, world trade dropped 65 percent and helped to put other countries in debt.
  • The Japanese Attack

    In 1931, the Japanese went against their parlement and invaded Manchuria. They then set up a puppet government and brought in engineers and technicians to set up mines and factories. This attack caused many protests from the League of Nations but Japan ignored them and withdrew from the League in 1933. Japan then attacked again 4 years later starting in northern China and also Beijing and other northern cities including the capital Nanjing.
  • Hitler Starts to go Against Treaty of Verallies

    During March of 1935, Hitler announced that Germany would no longer be obeying the Treaty of Versallies. The League of Nations then attempted to stop Hitler but failed to do so he took greater risks and later admits that he would have backed down if he was challenged.
  • Mussolini Attacks Ethiopia

    Unlike their attack in 1890, Italy was successful their second time around in attacking Ethiopia. When the emporer of Ethiopea, Haile Selassie, conntacted the League of Nations, the League did nothing.
  • Hitler Builds His Allies

    On this date, Hitler annouced that he would take in Austria and Czechoslovakia into the Third Reich. Because of this, Frace and Britian did not protect Austrian independence when Hitler sent his army into Austria and annexed it.
  • Nazis and Soviets

    Stalin and Hitler sign a nonaggression pact, promising never to attack each other. At the same time, Britian and France asked the Soviet Union to join them in stopping Hitler.
