The world's first traffic lights were installed near London's House of Commons (intersection of George and Bridge Streets) in 1868. They were invented by J P Knight. The lights worked by pulling a lever to either green or red to make the coloured gas turn on. This procedure was ran by a policeman who was in charge of it all. Unfortunatley only a month later the lights exploded and badly injured the policeman that was in control.
