  • James Watt improves steam engine

    Image Source: About.com On January 9, 1769 James Watt patented his improvement on the steam engine. His improvements enabled the steam engine to drive machinery. Because of this, factories were soon found all over Britain for they did not require a river or stream to power their machines.

  • Hargreaves patents Spinning Jenny

    Image Source: About.com On July 12, 1770 James Hargreaves patented the Spinning Jenny. Hargreave’s machine met the need for making thread to be used in the “flying shuttle”.   • Steamboats make transportation easier

    Image Source: Learn NC The invention of steam boats in 1807 made transportation much easier. The muscle power of rowers or the uncertain winds were no longer needed for water transportation. Robert Fulton Built the “Clemont” Which carried passengers up and down the Hudson River. Fulton ordered an enigine from James Watt. Source: Think Quest
  • Congress of Vienna met

    Image Source: napoleonguide.com In an effort to restore to the old order to France, Great Britain, Austria, Prussia, and Russia met at the congress of Vienna. They decided to install the principle of legitimacy. However, the principle of legitimacy was pretty much ignored everywhere else. The powers at Vienna tried to keep any one country from dominating all of Europe.

  • Steamship crosses Atlantic

    Image Source: Simplonpc On May 22, 1819 the first steamship crossed the Atlantic. The vessel was named Savannah. The ship left Savannah, Georgia and arrived in Liverpool. This one way trip took 29 days and 4 hours.

  • Charles X Overthrown

    Image Source: Higher Revelations Liberalism and nationalism began to break through the conservative domination of Europe. In France, liberals overthrew the Bourbon monarch Charles X in 1830. The liberals established a constitutional monarchy. Louis-Philippe, a cousin of Charles X, was chosen as the French King. Source: Glencoe World History: Modern Times- Alabama Edition
  • Factory Act Passed

    Image Source: Mail online An act was passed in 1833 to improve the working conditions for children. The act stated that no child under nine could be employed. Employees between the ages of nine and thirteen should not work more than nine hours a day. It stated that children are not to work at night. Source: The National Archives
  • Austria established control over Lombardy

    Image Source: howstuffworks.com A revolt broke out against the Austrians in Lombardy and Venetia in 1848. Revolutionaries in other Italian states also sought to create liberal constitutions.   • British North America Act passed

    Image Source: Mysteries of Canada In 1867, the Canadian Parliament passed the British North America Act. Which established a Canadian nation with its own constitution.   • Franco-Prussian War begins

    Image Source: oocities.org France declared war on Prussia on July 19, 1870. Because of this Germany joined with Prussia to fight France to fulfill thier treaties. The French won the first engagment on August 2 in Saarbrücken. The battle of Sedan started on September 1, 1870 and ended with the French surrendering. Source: History World
