    Spinning Jenny is Invented
    For more information on the spinning jenny, please click here. In 1764 James Hargreaves invented the spinning jenny, a spinning machine that made it possible to spin more than one ball of yarn or thread. The machine made the threads and yarns used by weavers in their looms.

    Steam-Engine Inprovement

    In 1782 James Watt, a Scotish inventor and mahcanical engineer improved the steam engine. Watt's new improvements on the machine improved the cotton industry as well. The steam engine was now able to spin and weave cotton.The imrovement on the steam engine made weaving and spinning cloth much faster and easier to be done. Birtain's cloth production increased dramatically.
  • Edmund Cartwright Events Water-Powered Loom

    The water-powered loom was designed in 1784 and built in 1785 by English clergyman and inventor, Edmund Cartwright. It's purpose was to produce threads so that chlothes coould be made faster. Over a fifty year time period the loom was refined until it was made completely automatic. This new and improved loom was now called the Lancashire Loom.

    In 1804 the first succesful steam-powered railroad locomotive was developed by British inventor Richard Trevithick. His invention made it easir and cheaper to transport goods.

    In 1833 Britain passed the Factory Act. It put regulations on child labor. According the act no children under the age of 9 could work, and children between 9-13 could only work 9 hours each day.

The Crimean War, which started began in 1853, was the result of a struggle between Russia and the Ottoman Empire. The Crimean ar destroyed the Concert of Europe and caused Russia to withdraw from Europeon affiars for 20 years and Austria was left with no friend son the great powers. The war allowed Italy and Germany to become unified and ended in 1856.
  • American Civil War

    The American Civil War lasted four years from 1861 to 1865 and had over 60,000 casualties. The war was fought between the Union and the Confederates (north and south) over slavey. Southerns (Confederates) wanted to keep African Americans as slaves even though they no longer needed them for manual labor such as cotton-picking because of Eli Whitney's cotton gin invention. Northerners (Union) on the other hand agreed with the idea of abolitionism, or a movement to end slavery. The Union won.
  • Alexander's Emancipation

    On March 3,1861,in Russia Czar Alexander II issued an emancipation edict, which freed serfs (servants) in Russia. The emancipation made it possible for peasents to own property and marry the people they choose to. The government also provided land for the peasents to live. Life was still unpleasent for the peasents, even after the Emancipation
  • Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamtion

    On January 1,1863 most slaves in the U.S were declared free by Lincoln's Proclamation Emancipation which restored control to the Union. The proclamation gave the slaves the right to join the military and more than 200,000 joined immidiatly after the proclomation was declared. The 200,000 new soilders helped the Union fight against the Confederacy.

    British North America Act

    In 1867 the British North America Act was passed because the Candaians were fearful of the Americans. The act established a Canadian nation with its very own constitution. Even though they had became a new natoin, their foreign affairs were still handled by the British government.
