In the early 1900s, the french gained control of Indochina (Vietnam).

British authorities opened fire on a large gathering of Indians in the town of Amritsar. Over 400 peopke were killed and 1200 were wounded.

Ho Chi Minh began to work for Vietnamese Independence from the french and in the 1930s, he organized an Indochneese Communist Party.

Because of the Indians refusing to obey the laws they felt were unjust, the British gave up and passed the Goverment of Indian Act that gave India some self- government.

Millions of people left homes by the moves ordered by the creation of the new government.

British Rule in India came to an end and East and West Pakistan were created.

The French decided to surrender control of the country to Ho Chi Minh.

At the Geneva Conference, The United States became aware of Ho Chi Minh ruling Vietnam as a communist leader and not a nationalist leader. They were afraid Ho Chi's choice to be a communist leader would change other rulers minds to become communist as well. The United States decided to temporarily divide Vietnam into two parts. Minh was in charge of the north and The United States Was In charge of the South.

The Northern and Southern parts of Vietnam were to be reunited after free elections in July of 1965.

American forces decided to withdraw their forces from Vietnam because of fighting and loss and the Last American helicopters left Vietnam in 1975.
