    Gallaudet
    First American school for students who were deaf. Attached is a picture of the school with some of its students. This university is still in operations today and thriving. With a focus on students with limitations breaking through those limitations to achieve great things.
  • Howe

    Howe
    First residential school for students who were blind. Attached is a picture of Howe himself. Though not what we think of today when it comes to "special education" these small steps of helping the deaf and blind were necessary changes to slowly begin the steps towards where we are today.
  • Brown vs Board of Education

    Brown vs Board of Education
    This landmark case helped established that separate was (is) not equal and opened the door for special needs students to start receiving better services through public education.
  • Section 504

    Section 504
    This is a part of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 that prevents discrimination of individuals due to their disabilities. In regards to special needs students, it helps ensure that they revive an adequate educations.
  • IDEA

    IDEA
    The Individuals with Disabilities Act is a fur part legislation that ensures students with disabilities the right to a Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) that is designed for the individual students (IEPs) to be successful.
  • Regular Education Initiative

    Regular Education Initiative
    A movement developed to try and correct the limitations of IDEA by eliminating separate special education programs and creating one education system that students with disabilities can supported inside of general education classrooms.
  • Mainstreaming Education

    Mainstreaming Education
    This was a movement that allowed special education students to participate in non-ex ed class rooms based on their skills, abilities, and limitations. But they also have access to resource or self contained classes to ensure they are provided with the LRE for their learning needs

    In the 20th century, a new movement began that was all about supporting students in the general education classrooms. During this time we saw an increase in the use of LRE or Least Restrictive Environment. Less and less were the students of disabilities being separated form their general education counterparts.
  • No Child Left Behind

    No Child Left Behind
    "Standard-based" reform, consequences to special ed. This was an act of congress that held schools accountable for how they taught students, this act was controversial due to how it penalized schools that did not show improvement.
