Important Events in US Education

  • Education is Required

    This year the first law was created to make Education "required" for children. Slaves and many children in the south still had no access to education for a long time.
  • George Washington - Education is Important

    George Washington stated that he believed education was the foundation for a happy life.
  • Webster's Fame

    Webster's Fame
    MOST IMPORTANT: This year Noah Webster released "American Spelling Book" and started that idea of Standard American English. Webster started what is taught in every Language Arts classroom. There is a huge emphasis on grammar and spelling in school that may not exist if it weren't for Webster. Link text
  • Department of Education

    This year the Department of Education was formed.
  • Multiple Choice

    This year Fredrick Kelly created the first multiple choice test. He warned us against the use of these tests stating that they would only test "lower order" thinking.
  • Brown vs. Board

    Brown vs. Board
    MOST IMPORTANT: The Supreme Court ruled that segregation of students into different schools is illegal. This ruling impacted all of the students in the south. It forced "white" schools to allow black students, causing many students to withdraw from school. Link text
  • Sputnik

    When Sputnik was launched, the U.S. felt behind and blamed the education system.
  • Ruby Bridges

    Ruby Bridges was the first African American to attend William Frantz Elementary School.
  • Elementary and Secondary Education Act

    Lyndon Johnson signed this act that helped fund impoverished schools which in turn brought the federal government into the local classrooms.
  • Immigration Act

    This act helped to make education more accessible for Immigrants.
  • Students with Disabilities

    Students with Disabilities
    MOST IMPORTANT: Students with disabilities are now required to have an education in the least restrictive environment. Previously they were often denied education. Graduation rates for students with disabilities increased drastically, but a lot of funding was taken from the states to provide the services. link text
  • Nation at Risk

    The media began emphasizing how uneducated our students were after a report was made by a panel.
  • No Child Left Behind

    No Child Left Behind
    MOST IMPORTANT Bush introduced the No Child Left Behind act which included pay cuts for teachers that didn't perform well, required that teachers be "highly qualified", introduced common core, and had unreasonable goals for every child reading on grade level by 2014. If students were not improving, schools would be punished. link text
  • Race to The Top

    Race to The Top is funding for schools that perform the best. It creates competition among schools and was meant to incentivize success in schools.
  • Every Student Succeeds Act

    Every Student Succeeds Act
    MOST IMPORTANT: Obama signed this act to change NCLB - it focuses more on giving students additional support in order to succeed. This act focuses on making students college and career ready. The law was well needed, as NCLB expired in 2007.
