  • British Debt After War

    British Debt After War
    After the French and Indian War the Britsh even though they won, were in serious debt. Approximately, 130 million pounds so this spurred the British to start taxing the colonists heavily.
  • Treaty of Paris

    Treaty of Paris
    France gives all land east of the Mississippi to England (England’s territory stretching from Hudson’s Bay to the Carribean, and from the Atlantic to the Mississippi.
    France gives all land west of the Mississippi to Spain.
  • Proclamation of 1763

    Proclamation of 1763
    The proclamation line prohibited settlement west of the Appalachian Mountains. It was Britain’s attempt to keep the peace between the Colonists and the Indians and protect the old colonies and deal with the new territories they acquired from the Treaty of Paris.
  • Stamp Act of 1765

    Stamp Act of 1765
    The first internal tax (taxed colonial products). It taxed paper products such as playing cards, newsletters, books, etc. It angered the colonists and sparked violence and riots all across the colonies. The British repealed the act in 1766 but replaced it with the Declaratory act, which allowed the British to tax anything they wanted and the colonists could not do anything about it.
  • Writs of Assistance

    Writs of Assistance
    Allowed any British police officer to search anything, anytime, anywhere, without a permit. It meant that colonists could no longer smuggle goods on their ships because they were being searched The Writs of Assistance were exercised when the British searched John Hancock’s ship; The Liberty.
  • The Boston Massacre

    The Boston Massacre
    It took place on March 5th, 1770. After months of increasing friction between Bostonian townspeople and British soldiers stationed in the city, the soldiers fired on American civilians in Boston. This transpired into a series of trials that caused a HUGE strain on America and Britain’s relationship.
  • The Boston Tea Party

    The Boston Tea Party
    The colonists were furious at the fact that their favorite beverage; tea, had been taxed by the Townshend Acts. As a result, they dressed up as Indians and raided 3 British trade ships, throwing over the contents (tea). The protest caused the British to create the Intolerable Acts as a punishment.
  • Coercive Acts

    Boston Port Act (1774)
    - Closed the Port of Boston until the colonists paid off the tea they dumped into the harbor during the Boston Tea Party. Administration of Justice Act (1774)
    - Any British officer or soldier of the Government who was arrested could be sent to England for trial. Massachusetts Government Act (1774)
    - Only allowed town meetings in Boston twice a year.
  • Quebec Act

    Quebec Act
    -Legislation passed by Parliament in 1774
    -Created an appointed government for Canada
    -Enlarged the boundaries of Quebec
    -Gave religious freedom to the French Canadians
  • Contiental Association

    Contiental Association
    The agreement adopted by the first continental Congress in 1774 in response to the Coercive Acts, to cut off trade with Britain until the unjust measures and rules placed on them were repealed.
