  • American Foreign Policy

    American had their foreign policy mostly because of commerical and business interests. In 1892, the number of imports and exports greatly increased.
  • Frederick Jackson Turner: Turner's Thesis

    At the 1893 World Fair, Frederick Turner gave his speech that eventually became the Turner Thesis. The Turner Thesis argued that should discover a new frontier in another country because that would allow Americans to keep their inventive spirits alive.
  • US Business interests in Hawaii

    In 1893, an American business man supported an uprising against the Queen of Hawaii, Queen Liliuokalani. The Hawaiian monarchy was overthrown after this.
  • Sanford B. Dole: 1st President of Hawaii

    After QueenLiliuokalani was overthrown as queen of Hawaii, Sanford B. Dole took over Hawaii as the president. He was a part of the Republican Party and was in office until June 14, 1900, when the president of Hawaii position was abolished
  • Teller Amendment

    This amendment said that the U.S would not establish permanant control over Cuba. It stated that the US would leave the government and control of the island to its people
  • US Declares war on Spain

    After the US Maine was blown up from what the Americans thought was Spain's doings, the tensions rose quickly. Shortly after, war is declared between Spain and the United States.
  • US is Victorious: Treaty of Paris

    Cuba is freed of Spanish ruling and Spain gives up Puerto Rico and Guam which eventually become US territories. The U.S paid Spain $20 million for the Phillipines, Puerto Rico, and Guam.
  • Phillippine American War

    The Phillippine-American War lasted longer and had more deaths than the Spanish-American War. On July 4, 1946, Phillippine receives their independence at last.
  • PR Foraker Act

    Puerto Rico becomes an "unicorporated territory." The citizens of Puerto Rico were not considered citizens of the United States.
  • Platt Amendment

    Cuba was not to enter into any agreements with foreign powes that would endanger its independence. The US could also intervene in Cuban affairs if necessary to maintain a independent government. Cuba HAD to lease Guantanamo Bay to the U.S for a naval station and Cuba could not build up an excessive public debt.
  • American Missionaries in China

    In 1905, American missionaries made their way to China in order to try to convert many Chinese to American religions. We tried to force our Western religions to the Chinese people that often did not want to be bothered by anyone.
  • Panama Canal Construction

    The Panama Canal was constructed after a many complaints of how long the journey was for ships. American and British leaders wanted a shorter journey from the Atlantic and Pacific Coasts. The Panama Canal was the very solution to this problem.
