    Ferdinand Magellan Lands in the Philippines
    Ferdinand becomes first European explorer to set foot in the Philippines and attempts to convert islanders to Christianity. Magellan eventually gets struck and killed by the natives and the survivors trudged off the Philippines and set a course back for Spain. The Philippines before Imperialism was just native villages.

    Spain sends forces to the Philippines, fighting with Portugal for the Philippines Spain eventually joined together or, annexed with Portugal and the Philippines went to Spain.

    President McKinley was president of the United States at the time during the Spanish-American War. The war was caused by the sinking of a U.S. battleship.America's military burned down villages. The U.S. quickly won the war. The war ended with about 4,200 U.S. soldiers, 20,000 Filipino soldiers, and 200,000 Filipino civilians dead. They treated the Filipino citizens very poorly as many of them lived in poverty.

    The Philippines came to a conclusion and they agreed to the Treaty of Paris with The United States. The United States purchased land from the Philippines from Spain for 20 million dollars. The president of the United States at the time was President Willam McKinley. He decided that he wouldn't give Spain back the land from the Philippines because it would of been dishonorable. Also the Philippines wouldn't be ready for self-rule because they had no orginization and it would of became an anarchy.

    The Americans created the Philippine Organic Act on April 1st 1902.The Philippine Organic Act gave the government a bicameral legislature. A bicameral legislature means that the legislature consists of two houses. The Philippine Organic Act also appointed a Governor-General as the cheif executive of the Philippines.

    In 1913 the Democrats took power and, eventually they had only one person as their ruler.The Jones Act was passed by the U.S. Congress in 1916, it provided for a popularly elected upper house as well as they had a lower house also. The Philippines also recieved their first pledge to independence.

    The Treaty of Manila stated peace between the United States and the Philippines. It was signed on July 4th, 1946 in Manila, the capital of the Philippines. The Philippines gained their independence, and was now self ruled.The first president of the Philippines was Emilio Aguinaldo.

    Ferdinand Marcos was a dictator in the Philippines. Marcos didn't allow the presidential election in 1973. If the election was held Benigno Aquino would have won. Aquino was one of the first to be jailed when the martial law was imposed. Martial law is when the dictator proclaimed that certain troubled areas of the Philippines were controlled by military. Aquino went back to the U.S. Aquino and his wife went back to Phillipines in 1983.

    When Aquino stepped off the plane he was shot and killed by the Phillipine military. This was known as the People's Power Movement.
