  • U.S Tries to end isolation in Japan

    In 1853, the U.S sent a fleet of ships to Japan with the hopes of ending the nation's self-imposed isolation and open it to trade. This was soon followed by similar attempts and treaties from England, France, and other nations.Treaties were made allowing trade between Japan and other countries, this helped to kick start the westernization of Japan.
  • Sepoy Mutiny

    As the The British East Indian company recruited more and more sepoys, they also had to give them firearms. They supplied the firearms to the sepoys, whom most of were Hindi or Muslim. After a while, the sepoys found out that they were lacing the bullet cartridges with pig and beef fat, both of which came from animals that were considered sacred in their cultures.

    In 1858, India became under the direct rule of the British after the rebellion of 1857. After the rebellion, serious thought was taken into the causes of the rebellion. One of the causes, was that more communication between the British and the Indians was needed, and not just between British army officers and their Indian staff. More communication was needed in more civil areas.

    Soon after Britain took control of India, it became its "Crown Jewel". Many raw materials such as cotton, some food, and other commodities. Overall, Britain benefited in many different ways from taking control of India.

    British Control over India

    Britain's control over India was mainly for Britain's benefit. Britain exploited India and all of it's resources. Under Britain's rule, India had 17 famines, which was the most it had ever had in under a century. This especially shows Britain's poor ruling because food was never a major problem in India, people normally had enough to eat to keep them alive, but the famines caused major death. Also, over the course of the century under Britain's rule, the literacy rate actually declined.

    Meiji Era

    Fearing western technological and military superiority, Emperor Mutsuhito felt that the best way to counter Western influence was to quickly modernize, industrialize, and militarize. This was called the Meiji Era. Japan modeled their navy after Great Britain, their government after Germany, and their educational system after the United States. After 30 years, Japan transformed into a powerful Industrial nation. M = Meiji

  • Sino-Japaneese war

    With their new military, Japan aimed to defeat their biggest Asian competetor: CHINA. The war was between Japan and China over trading rights in Korea. This war lasted only a few months, Japan ended up driving China out of Korea, and destroyed the Chinese navy.
