The US begin a massive airlift to bring water, food, and medicine to the people in West Berlin that lasted nearly a year. American planes sustained over 2 million West Berliners. -
Soviet Union Tests atomic bomb
On August 29, 1949 the Soviet Union tested there first atomic bomb. It caught the US off guarded because they were not expecting the USSR to get one so soon. It was detonated in a remote test site at Semipalatinsk in Kazakhstan, it was code name "First Lightning". A US spy plane on September 3 flying off the coast of Siberia picked up the first recording of radioactivity from the explosion. -
Korean War starts
The Korean war started on June 25, 1950 and cease fire in July 27, 1953. It started when North Korea invaded South Korea by land and sea. The N. Koreans were supported by China with help by the Soviets and the S. Koreans supported by the United Nations and the US. It was a three year bloody battle for the defense of S. Korea -

Truman fired MacArthur due to the public statements made that went against the administration policies. -
Hydrogen bomb exploded in Pacific
The United States test the first airborne hydrogen bomb drop in the pacific. They test it on a small island called Namu in the Bikini Atoll located in the Pacific Ocean. This made the arms race to take a giant leap forward since the bomb was more effective in combat. -

Stalin dies on March 5, 1953 when he was 73 years old. He died by cerebral hemorrhage. -

Kennedy was asked by Lyndon B. Johnson to run for president and won against the vice-president Richard M. Nixon he was the youngest president and was also the first catholic. -

The Cuban missile crisis was a 13 day period that the tension between the US and the USSR was the highest. It was the loading and the develop of ballistic missiles in Cuba that if activated it can hit any US city in minutes. It lasted from October 16, 1962 to October 28, 1962. -
November 22, 1963 Kennedy assassinated
On November 22, 1963 President John F. Kennedy was assassinated shortly after noon. He was in Dallas, Texas when he was shot. Lee Harvey Oswald was the man who shot Kennedy when he was on his way to on Motorcade route, he was preparing with his advisers for the next presidential election.
