When Malala was 6 years old she stole a toy from her neighborhood friend Sabrina and soon developed a nasty stealing habit. She was soon caught and her family was so disappointed in her that it became an important event in her life. Afterwards, she vowed to never steal again, something she says she has kept, which is astonishing. -
Violence in Pakistan Escalates
In 2007, former Pakistani prime minister Benazir Bhutto was assassinated by the Taliban, who was an important role model for Malala until her untimely death. The Taliban was soon blowing up schools for girls since their interpretation of Islam did not allow for the education of females. -
Malala Writes a Diary About the Violence in Swat
In 2009, Malala started writing diary entries in the BBC to document and tell the outside world on what was happening inside Pakistan in response to the Taliban threat to female schools. It was also at this point that she appeared in a New York Times documentary about the acts that the Taliban had performed. -
Malala's Family is Forced to Flee Swat
In late 2009, the Taliban began a long and drawn out war against the government, forcing Malala and her family to flee the region. They go to Pakistan's capital, Islamabad, and stay there for three months, until they return. During this three month period, Malala continued giving speeches and interviews against the Taliban, starting a plot for her death. -
Malala is Shot by the Taliban
Malala was shot by the Taliban on October 9, 2012 on her way home from school. It sparked international outrage and condemnation of the Taliban. Two other girls were also wounded along with Malala. -
Malala is Transported to the UK
Soon after the shooting it became clear to many that if she remained in Pakistan she would die. With this in mind, her parents made the decision to transport her to the UK to receive better treatment as the conditions in Pakistan were abysmal. -
Malala Survives and Continues to Fight Against the Oppression of Religous Extremists
Malala survived the shooting and now resides in the UK, where she still advocates for education for all. She has come out of the shooting stronger and more determined than ever. Her newfound fame and influence has helped her propel her ideas throughout the world, which have the intention of making the world a better place.
