    The National Hurricane Center becomes wary of and gives out its first warning about a tropical storm that appears to be migrating towards Florida. It formed over the Bahamas and is currently around 350 miles away from Miami, Florida.

As it continues to cross the Gulf of Mexico its speed begins to pick up to about100 mph. The NHC predicts Katrina will become a major storm in the time to come.

    Katrina, overnight has strengthened more with winds around 115 -mph meaning it is now a category 3 hurricane. The first "Hurricane-hunter" aircrafts were flown into the storm on this day. They measured things such as barometric pressure, ocean surface and wind speed to find out more information about the potential threat it posed.

    The storm turns into a category 4 level storm as speeds are now 145 mph. The storm itself is only about 310 miles from the Mississippi river. Early in the morning the mayor of New Orleans issues an evacuation order making thousands of citizens to be forced to leave the city. Before noon the storm has hit 175 mph wind speeds, making it category 5 and is only 225 miles from the Mississippi river now. People at the NHC have begun to describe Katrina as a "potentially catastrophic" storm.

    Katrina begins heading towards Louisiana with speeds around 155 mph. The storm first hits New Orleans at around 7 in the morning with water beginning to flow over one of the levees. The storm continues to pass through New Orleans and the eye of the storm hits at around 11 am. The strongest parts of the storm hit parts of Mississippi as the eye passes through New Orleans. It grows weaker the more it passes through New Orleans and as it begins to leave New Orleans its speeds are down to 90 mph.
