History Time Line

  • James Watt

Scottish inventor James Watt was born on the 30th January 1736 and died on the 25th of August 1819. James Watt had a pivotal role in inventing the modern steam engine by modifying and improving the previous steam engine they had in the 1700's. James had two wives, Ann MacGregor and Margret Miller and a brother John Watt. James revolutionised the industrial industry at the time and put the world one step closer to reaching what we have now.
  • Britain begins to develop Industrially

    Britain begins to develop Industrially
Industrial manufacturing used to be in people’s house using hand tools or basic machines. Industrialisation marked a shift to powered, special-purpose machinery, factories and mass production and a faster rate it started between (1750-1840)
  • Louis XVI

Louis XVI the most famous French King, he is very important mainly because of his bad spending habits and ignorance revolutionised the whole of France. If he didn't push the limits harder than they could ever be pushed then we would still have kings in France instead of Prime Ministers and possibly no French help in WW2 which could have helped with a Nazi Germany win changing the whole course of history, but people decided enough was enough and there needed to be change.
  • Cause/Effect: Discovery of Australia

The Discovery of Australia started in 1606 and ended in 1770 as Captain Cook finally finds the east coast of Australia to claim it in the name of Britain. I believe this caused the invention/construction of the Great Eastern because people need to travel long distances without stopping to get there efficiently just like the route from England to Australia. Since it took multiple stops in places like Brazil and South Africa having a vehicle which doesn't need stopping at that time really helps.
  • James Watt patents the steam engine

The steam engine took 12 years to be built by James Watt with the help of his partner Matthew Boulton which changed the industrial revolution for the better. It all started when James Watt was just an amateur in 1764 he was given the task to repair a Newcomen model steam engine (he was 28 at the time) but decided that the model was very bad to be used for pumping water from mines which are what they were used for at the time, so he designed a new one, which Matthew Boulton decided to help with.
  • Cause/Effect: The French Revolution

The French Revolution started by multiple events, the main ones were Louis XVI (16) spending a massive amount of money on rich stuff for himself which annoyed most of the citizens and peasants who thought that money could be spent on something useful for the country whilst people are starving and living cold and harsh conditions. I say in my Abolition of Slavery segment bit The French Revolution affected the slavery bill because of people’s sudden belief in equality.
  • The French Revolution

    The French Revolution
The French Revolution had an important impact. The French invasion removed the legal and economic barriers that had protected the nobility, clergy, guilds, and urban oligarchies and established the principle of equality before the law, This unified and increased the power of the national state. It increased the feeling of French nationalism, and it set a precedent for a democratic French government, the leader of the French revolution is Napoleon who concurred most of Europe.
  • Louis XVI gets executed/ Effect of the French Revolution

Louis XVI gets executed/ Effect of the French Revolution
An effect of the French Revolution was the execution of Louis XVI and he was executed by a Guillotine he was executed because people thought he had powers and links with other foreign countrys and than was executed because of it, he was executed on the 21st January 1793
  • Isambard Kingdom Brunel

Isambard Kingdom Brunel is considered "one of the most ingenious and prolific figures in engineering history" and for good reason too, as he designed the very important and very revolutionary Great Eastern which pathed the way in the industrial revolution in terms of boating. But not only did he design the Great Eastern he designed other things like bridges, tunnels, railways, ships and docks, one of the most famous things he designed was the Paddington Station.
  • Cause/Effect: Luddite and Slavery

Even though both are part of the original suggestions of events I still heavily believe that the abolition of slavery helped a lot with the Luddite uprising. With there being no legal slaves anymore in Britain there would be a lot more people available to protest against the machinery at the time, imagine how much fewer people there would be if people could still be slaves and still own slaves making a business out of it so they wouldn't care about machinery at all.
  • Abolition of Slavery in Britain

A bill was passed through the House of Commons and then followed up by the House of Lords to be completed on the 1st of August 1833. The bill was originally made in July of 1833. Many people believe that the bill was encouraged by the fact that the French Revolution happened recently which fought for equality, so people believed the same should be in Britain starting with the end of slavery. But not everyone was free straight away the became apprentices for 6 years.
  • The Luddite uprising in Britain

The Luddite uprising in Britain lasted 5 years from 1811 to 1816 which had the sole purpose of rebelling against the machines which they thought would take over their jobs and make them irrelevant so in protest they started destroying machines. The movement originated in Nottingham which is north of London, but the movement became nationwide, the protest became so massive that owners of Mills were allowed to shoot protesters who were trying to destroy the machines.
  • Gas lighting in homes and streets

Gas lighting in homes and streets
The person who invented gas lighting was William Murdoch, Gas lighting was in the streets as early 19th century with most streets in London lit by gas as early as 1816. But for the first 50 years it was generally distrusted and few homes were lit. But then the light bulb was invented in 1879 by Thomas Edison
  • William Murdoch

    William Murdoch
William Murdoch was a Scottish engineer and inventor. Murdoch was employed by the firm of Bolton & Watt and worked for them in Cornwall, as a steam engine erector for ten years, spending most of the rest of his life in Birmingham, England he was also the inventor of gas lighting
  • Thomas Edison

    Thomas Edison
Thomas Edison was the inventor of the light bulb but he didn't just make that he was an inventor so he made lots of things in his time such as the first movie camera to many more but his inventions had an impact and without some of his inventions we might not have what we have today ,without the light bulb we would probably live in the dark.
  • Combined Sewer Systems Were Invented

    Combined Sewer Systems Were Invented
Combined Sewer systems were invented in 1856 and it was very different to when the first sewer systems in London.combined sewer systems are sewers that are designed to collect rainwater runoff, domestic sewage, and industrial wastewater in the same pipe. Most of the time, combined sewer systems transport all of their wastewater to a sewage treatment plant, where it is treated and then discharged to a water body.
  • The Great Eastern is Launched

The Great Eastern was the largest ship ever built at the time when she was launched in 1858 meaning she was also the biggest steamship as well. She could travel the globe (England to Australia) carrying 4,000 people and not need to refuel once, it was designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel which is a person, not some sort of company, and built by J. Scott Russell & Co at Millwall Iron Works. The boat took less than 4 years to fully construct starting 1st of May 1858 and ending 31st of January 1858.
  • Joseph Bazalgette

    Joseph Bazalgette
Joseph Bazalgette was the person who built the sewer system in London in 1865 he was a civil engineer his primary source was building sewer systems in London because that is what he did best
  • London builds a sewer system

    London builds a sewer system
Joseph Bazalgette was the person who built the sewer system in London in 1865 but by the time 1866 most of the sewer system was connected his invention has now advanced sewer systems all over London and all over the world. And there’s a completely new and different way on how it works
  • Thomas Edison Invents light bulb

    Thomas Edison Invents light bulb
Thomas Edison was the inventor behind the light bulb and it was a revolutionary effect. It was a improvement from gas lighting in 1816 this light bulb was more efficient and everyone had one.
  • Sweat Shops Were Invented

    Sweat Shops Were Invented
Sweat Shops were invented in 1880. A sweat shop is a factory or workshop, especially in the clothing industry, where manual workers are employed at very low wages for long hours and under poor conditions. And this Event Correlates to when Britain began to develop Industrially in 1750.
  • Cause//Effect: The RMS Titanic

The RMS Titanic started construction 31st of March 1909 and was completed on 2 April 1912 and made its first and only voyage on the 10th of April 1912 on a route from Southampton to New York City. The reason I believe these are connected is that the Titanic had steam engines which had no reason to do with the Titanic sinking. The engines could run at 75 rpm (Rotations Per Minute) and could generate 30,000 horse power.
