On June 17, 1972 members of President Nixon's reelection campaign were caught stealing documents and wiretapping phones in the Watergate Complex in Washington, D.C. Nixon attempted to cover up the crimes but this incident ultimately lead to his resignation on August 9, 1974. -
Sandra Day O'Connor began her political career on the state level. In 1979 she was chosen to serve on the court of appeals. In 1981, President Reagan nominated O'Connor for associate justice of the Supreme Court. She was voted in unanimously to become the first female justice of the Supreme Court. Fun Fact: I got to meet her 9 years ago when I lived in Montana. She visits every summer to fish there and I was lucky enough to sell her a fishing license that year. :) -
In 1998, news of an affair between President Clinton and a White House intern became known to the public. The affair took place in 1995 and occurred over the course of a few years. Ultimately, the House impeached President Clinton for obstruction of justice and perjury, but the Senate acquitted him. -
On September 11, 2001, al Qaeda, an Islamic terrorist group, hijacked 4 planes. One plane crashed into the Pentagon, one crashed in a Pennsylvania field, and the other two hit the World Trade Center's twin towers in New York City. This resulted in major efforts to combat terrorism. -
Donald J. Trump, previously known for his success in real estate and his reality TV show The Apprentice, was elected the 45th President of the United States in the 2016 presidential election. He stands as the only president in history to have no political or military experience prior to his presidency. He was also impeached by the House for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress but was also acquitted. -
On March 11, 2020, the Covid-19 virus outbreak was announced by the World Health Organization to be a pandemic. By December 2020, the virus had spread to nearly every country in the world and infected over 75 million people. Businesses and schools were shut down, cities were on complete lockdown, and people were asked to quarantine/isolate depending on each situation.
