    First ever gun

    First ever gun
I think the oldest gun to be fired was around the 4th century when the Japanese used a crude form of black powder to shoot a stone out of a bamboo chute. Think of it as a cannon you held in your hand, as it had a wick you had to light to set of the charge. The Chinese discovered black power in the 8th century, which spawned the use of cannons in the western world in about the 12th century.

Once cocked the machine could be fired be either hitting a release catch with a hammer or pulling on the catch with a rope, both mechanisms were designed by Leonardo for the firing of the crossbow.
