History of the USB Standard

  • USB 1.0

    USB 1.0
USB 1.0 had specified data rates. The low speed/bandwith is 1.5 Mbit/s. The higher speed/bandwith is 12 Mbit/s. USB 1.0 didn't allow extension cables, due to the timing and power limitations.
  • USB 1.1

    USB 1.1
USB 1.1 was mainly released to fix the problems in USB 1.0. USB 1.1 was the earliest revision that was widely adopted.
  • USB 2.0

    USB 2.0
USB 2.0 added a higher speed of 480 Mbit/s. It also kept USB 1.1 full speed of 12 Mbit/s. The effectiveness of high speedqq \ is limited to 35 MB/s or 280 Mbit/s due to bus access constraints.
  • USB 3.0

    USB 3.0
USB 3.0 introduced a new super speed mode. The 3.0 port is typically blue and can be backwards compatible with USB 2.0 cables and devices. The data signalling rate is 5.0 Gbit/s.
  • USB 3.1

    USB 3.1
USB 3.1 is the updated version of 3.0. It has super speed mode and is backwards compatible with 2.0 and 3.0.
