The first mechanized mower was patented by the English inventor Edwin Budding in 1830. This device was a 19-inch (48-centimeter) roller mower that used a set of rotating cutters operating against fixed ones-an adaptation of the rotary shearing machine used to cut nap off of cotton cloth.
