History of the Computer

  • Konrad Zuse invents the Z1 computer

Konrad Zuse invents the Z1 computer
What: The Z1 was the first freely programable computer and was invented by Konrad Zuse. It was actually a mechanical calculator that used a bunch of new technology. It was meant to solve large equation easily and better than older calculators and becoming the first binary computer Why: I chose this because it was the first event and the fist real computer. It was what started the chain of many invention and inovations. It was the great grandfather of all computers.
  • John Bardeen, Walter Brattain & Wiliam ShockleyThe Transistor

John Bardeen, Walter Brattain & Wiliam ShockleyThe Transistor
What: This invention was what chnaged verything for computers back then so wasn't reall y a computer but computers depend on other invetion, like this one. Transisors, whcih were made of conductors, replaced the older tubes which allowed computers to do the same thing but with less power and space. Why: There were 4 invetions that made a huge impact on computers and this was the second. Each invention stared a new gen of computers and this was made the 2nd gen of them. So this was pretty big.
  • John Presper Eckert & John W. MauchlyUNIVAC Computer

John Presper Eckert & John W. MauchlyUNIVAC Computer
What: This was the first commercial computer and was needed for the U.S for adding up all the votes in presidential elections. Mutlple of these computers were sold for business and government. It also used magnetic cards instead of puch cards makig it much faster. Why: I thought this was pretty big bieng the first commercial computer that was made and sold multiple times. It wasn'y just some huge invetion bad in a lab and only used there other people could use it.
  • International Business MachinesIBM 701 EDPM Computer

International Business MachinesIBM 701 EDPM Computer
What: IBM had been around before but they hadn't done anything amzing yet until 1953 where they created the 701, the first of the 700 series. This was another commercial much like the Univac but was much more succesful and was used as a defence calculator for the U.S. Why: This is when IBM, todays biggest computer company, enters the history of computer. IBM is responsible for many inventions/ innavations with computer that revolutionized them and the 701 was just the beggining to all of it.
  • Steve Russell & MITSpacewar Computer Game

Steve Russell & MITSpacewar Computer Game
What: Spacewar was created by an MIT student on a PDP-1, which had the fist operating system to allow multiple users. The game is where two people control seperate ships trying to avoid being sucked into the blackhole and trying to shoot each other. Why: Spacewar wasn't the first computer game, but was the first well known one and was very popular, By the mid 60's even when computers were very expensive, they could be found on nearly every computer.
  • ARPAnet

    ARPAnet
What: ARPAnet started originally as a protector for military information by having a network of a bunch of spread out computer. It was meant to hook up reshearchers so they could get info no matter whee they were but it all changed to a public thing.
Why: All this might sound familiar because that is kind of how the internet works, the ARPAnet was the greatgrandfather of the internet.
  • Faggin, Hoff & MazorIntel 4004 Computer Microprocessor

Faggin, Hoff & MazorIntel 4004 Computer Microprocessor
What: Was created by intel because they need to create a bunch of chips but they didn't have time and man power so instead they made one small chip that did everything. After intergrated circuits thre was one thing left to do and that was make it smaller and that what intel did and revolutionized computers. Why: This was the very first microprocessor that did everything at an extremly tiny size. It was the first all in one CPU. With this you could start to prgramm artificial intelligence.
  • Scelbi & Mark-8 Altair & IBM 5100 Computers

    Scelbi & Mark-8 Altair & IBM 5100 Computers
What: This was the first succesful commercial computer and what made amazing is that it showcased the intel 8080 chip, was cheap, easy to get, and expendable. Why: The altair wasn't the very first but it was the one that started the big pc boom and everyone was wanting and changing it around. This is also when bill gates enter the pciture and starts off microsoft.
  • MicrosoftMS-DOS Computer Operating System

    MicrosoftMS-DOS Computer Operating System
What: It started out with a relationship with IBM and microsoft because IBM need an OS for there computers. IBM was then directed to a few other OS to go off of but eventually just went back to Mircrosoft and paid them to make them an operating system. Why: It was not the first OS but the best. It overcame every othe OS and dominated the market becoming standard for OS's. Also Bill did convince IMB to get the rights for the OS thus getting microsoft's name in history and a lot of money.
  • Apple Lisa Computer

    Apple Lisa Computer
What: Lisa was the first to intergrate GUI (graphical user interface) which is where instead of typing in commands it uses images as sort of links that are the commands. Steve Jobs got the idea from Xerox and was inspired to create a home computer with GUI, and that is what he did. Why: It was the first sold computer with GUI which is what we use today. With out GUI everyone would still be typing in commands. It revolutionized compuers and truelly made computers user friendly.
