    President John Adamns signed the Act of relief of sick and disabled. The Act is meant to collect funds in order to fund hospitals and doctors for injured or sick seamen.

  • Connecticut Asylum for the Education and Instruction of Deaf and Dumb Persons

    Connecticut Asylum for the Education and Instruction of Deaf and Dumb Persons
    First school for the deaf in the U.S.
    It was originally a residential school.
    First sign language taught was in french which later was modified to current ASL
    Later became The American School for the Deaf.

    Horace Mann School for the Deaf
    First public school for the deaf and hard of hearing in the United States.
    Built in Boston, Massachusetts
    Currently the school is an inclusive multi-cultural/multi-lingual school.

    Division of Vocational Rehabilitation Services
    Agency created in the 1920's after the passing of the Smith-Fess Act. The agency usses federal money to pay for students with disabilities education in order to help them find gainful employment once they have achieved a degree.

  • University of Illinois at Galesburg

    University of Illinois at Galesburg
    The school year 1947-48 the University of Illinois at the Galesburg campus joiined the Veterans administration hospital in order to accomodate the WWII veterans that were using the GI bill in order to get a college degree
  • Brown v Board of Education

    Brown v Board of Education
    Landmark civil rights decision which stopped segragated schools.
    This opened the door for children with disabilities to also bring suits to the court to allow inclusion of children with disabilities in the regular classroom.
  • UC Berkeley

    UC Berkeley
    UC Berkeley opens up the first program for disable students.
    The program opened in 1956. It was staffed by graduate students.
    The program included regular studens as well as disable students to attend the universtiy and optain a degree.
  • President John F. Kennedy created the President's Panel on Mental Retardation

    John F. Kennedy created the President's Panel on Mental Retardaiton. The panel recommended federal aid to states to assist families with children with disabilities.
