    The American School for the Deaf was founded in Hartford, Connecticut. It was also a school for children with disabilities. Before they used to call the school, The American Asylum. The History of deaf has has monumental moments. Deaf ed was not always looked at in a positive manner. In the past, people thought there were no need for educating the deaf, it was considered unintelligent.Students have full communication access, access to education, and to a brighter future.
  • Perkins Institute for the Visually Impaired

    Perkins Institute for the Visually Impaired
    The Perkins Institute started with a man name John D. Fisher. There was a stigma about children with disabilities. If you had a child with a disability, you would get talked about or shamed. There were no schools for the blind. To Fisher, it seemed wrong. Eventually, he opened up a school for the blind in his hometown Watertown, MA in the summer of 1831. The Visually Impaired Institution is the oldest school for the blind in the U.S. You were required to live and learn there.
  • Columbia Institutions

    Columbia Institutions
    Opened in 1857 and began providing education and training for the deaf, mute and blind. Columbia Institution was given permission to give college degrees by the U.S. Congress. It was the first college established for people with disabilities.
  • Beattie v. Board of Education

    Beattie v. Board of Education
    A student had a severe mental disability and even though physically he was disabled, mentally he was fine. But because of his condition, teachers and other staffs were nauseous by this student physical appearance. He ended up being expelled from the school. Once expelled, he was moved to a school for the deaf.     The CEC group is one of the largest group that advocate for exceptional students. This group was the first advocacy group for children with disabilities.     Autism means a developmental disability significantly affecting verbal and non-verbal communication and effects the child educational performance.     Section 504 is a federal law that protects students with disabilities in programs and activities that receives financial assistance.   • Education for all Handicapped Children

    Education for all Handicapped Children
    This was a law enacted by Congress in 1975. This Act required that all public schools provide equal access to education and one free meal a day. One of the big reasons for this Act is that a child with disability was separated from mainstream education.   • American with Disability Act

    American with Disability Act
    This Act was signed into law by President George W. Bush. The act ensured that people with a special needs will have the same rights as everybody else does. This was for both school and work. This act also stated that people with special needs cannot be discriminated against in schools, the workplace as well as transortation.
  • IDEA

    IDEA
    A law that helps and supports students who have a learning disability. This law requires that public schools provide special education for the purpose of granting equal education. This act applies to children ages 6-21. It protects parents rights through due process. This act also requires development of an IEP. They simply create a protection for a child with disability.
