  • Asylum for the Deaf and Dumb

    Asylum for the Deaf and Dumb
    The first school for students with special education was the Asylum for the Deaf and Dumb. This school was created so that those students who were born deaf or intellectually disabled who weren't given the proper education or communication could get education tailored to them.
  • Council for Exceptional Children

    The Council for Exceptional Children was created by educators. It is meant to help educators to be prepared to give quality education to those students around them. It is meant to advocate for children with special needs.
  • The Arc

    The Arc
    The Arc is an organization that helps those with disabilities that are related to development or intellect. This helps those with disabilities find jobs and help the employers adapt. It was initially created by parents with children that had disabilities, to further help them.
  • Brown vs. Board of Education

    Brown vs. Board of Education
    In Brown vs. Board of Education the Supreme Court rules that schools that were segregating off of races was a violation to the fourteenth amendment. It was deemed unequal to keep students segregated based off of their race since it would continue to keep minorities behind.
  • Elementary and Secondary Education Act

    Elementary and Secondary Education Act
    This program was created and passed by legislation that allocated funds to schools that have a lot of low-income families. It's meant to minimize the education gap in these communities and schools. It also provided schools with textbooks and funded preschool programs.
  • Special Olympics

    Special Olympics
    The Special Olympics is a sports organization that allows children and adults that have intellectual disabilities join in on sports and train them year-round. This gives them the opportunity to develop physical fitness and enjoy being a part of a team.
  • Free Appropriate Public Education

    FAPE is a legislation that protects those that have disabilities within programs which get federal funding. The education level needs to be equivalent to those without disabilities in the sense that they need to be provided the same quality of education that leads them onto the same path as those without.

    Section 504
    The Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act was created that made sure the those with disabilities had the proper rights. It was one of the first ones that were created to protect those with disabilities and set in motion the rest of what special education and protection of those with disabilities.

    The ADA was a law that prohibits discrimination against those with disabilities. This meant they were not allowed to be discriminated against in any place, whether it be public or private. This included jobs, schools, transportation.
