  • Brown vs Board of Edu. of Topeka

    Brown vs Board of Edu. of Topeka

    Considered a landmark in special education history. This court ruling decided that racial segregation was not correct and mixed individuals regardless of color. Oliver Brown's daughter was not accepted to a school because she was black and was advised to take a bus to a school further away. Separate was not considered equal.

    A court ruling where a 17-year-old student with disabilities was suspended for disruptive behavior. The court ruled that the school cannot suspend a disabled child. Honig decision gave light to the idea of a "functional behavioral assessment" (FBA) for children with disabilities.

    This Act was passed by Congress and signed into law by President George W. Bush. The law was of main importance to general education in the U.S from the year 2002 to 2015. Provided opportunities to all children of any background, household income, race, etc.. This law has been currently replaced by the Every Student Succeeds Act starting in 2015.
