This school was founded by Gallaudet and originally called the American Asylum for the Education and Instruction of the Deaf and Dumb, but was later changed. The intention of this school was to give children with disabilities a chance to receive an education. This school paved the way for other schools and special education programs to open in the near future.
Special Education -
In this court case, the Supreme Court ruled that it is unconstitutional to separate children in a public school due to race. This is a very important case because it spread the idea that separate cannot be equal within an educational setting. These ideas created a foundation for other segregation cases, including those relating to individuals with disabilities.

The outcome of this court case extended the right of special education to ALL students with ALL disabilities. The Supreme Court ruled that students with disabilities must have access to a free public education. This right to education be made available to all students with disabilities, regardless of their financial status.

This act guaranteed a free, appropriate, and public education (FAPE) for all children with disabilities. This law also required all public schools accepting federal funding to ensure they are providing equal educational opportunities to students with disabilities. This also includes a requirement that schools must provide at least one meal a day to students with disabilities.

The Supreme Court ruled that a California school board had violated the Education for All Handicapped Children Act by expelling a student for a behavioral problem primarily caused by their disability. Expelling someone due to a behavior of their disability was ruled to be an unlawful form of discrimination. This court case ensured that students are not expelled due to something that they cannot change due to their disability.
Honig v. Doe -
The ADA was a civil rights law that was created to protect the rights of people who have a disability. This act outlaws any act of discrimination based on a person’s disability. Reasonable accommodations for people with disabilities are also required under this act.
ADA -
The AAPD is a nonprofit organization that was formed to advocate for people with disabilities. This typically includes helping a person with a disability with their legal rights. The main goals of this organization are to ensure implementation of the Americans with Disabilities Act and further expand on the rights of disabled individuals.
AAPD -
This act amended the Education for All Handicapped Children Act of 1975 by changing laws and procedures on how to discipline students with disabilities. Congress made these changes in order to ensure a safe and conductive environment for all students. This act made several changes to the previous act by giving schools increased flexibility for dealing with the misbehavior of students with disabilities in an appropriate manner.

The Supreme Court ruled that students with disabilities must receive the services they need to succeed in school. This court case resulted in the requirement of supplemental services to ensure all students have an equal opportunity to learn and succeed in school. Supplemental services include transportation, support, therapy, medical, and any other special accommodation service a student with a disability may need.

This act reauthorized the IDEA and added new requirements regarding students with disabilities. This includes the establishment of a new way to summarize student performance. This act also requires that every student that graduates special education must be given a diploma, unless they exceed a certain age put in place under state law.
