Mason Fitch Cogswell was a surgeon who recruited some other advocates in order to create this school. The first public funding for the education of students with disabilities occurred raising to about $5,000.
  • Gaulladet University

  • Vocational Rehabilitation Act (VRA)

This law defines what it means to be a person who is handicapped. It additionally defines what type of education would be appropriate for students with disabilities. The key feature to this law is that it prohibits any discrimination against students with disabilities in a federally funded program. This, again, enforces the idea of equality for all students in our nation.
  • Education of the Handicapped Act Amendments

This establishment extends free, and appropriate, educational services to children with disabilities. This correlates to the idea of a less restrictive environment because the children with disabilities will receive an education that will fully benefit them like the curricula, their classmates, and the classroom environment. Little to no restrictions, in terms of a child's classroom environment, shows that the learning process is appropriate, equal, and helpful to the child's academic success.
  • Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)

Congress reauthorized and expanded the EAHCA, or the Education for All Handicapped Children Act, into IDEA. It holds a purpose to allow all eligible children with disabilities to receive a free, appropriate education. It also ensures that these students will have efficient special education services to better their learning experiences.

This law provides money for extra educational assistance to children who need it most in order to increase the number of students to succeed in their academics. It also helps in recruiting high-quality staff, enforcing safety within schools, and supporting instruction for English language learners. Areas affected by this law include increased accountability, school choice, and greater flexibility for schools, school districts, and states.
  • Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEIA)

This law reveals that a continuum of educational services must be available for students with disabilities. This means that students will have a range of service options available to meet their individual needs. Not every child with a disability is the same as another, so having this large range will allow every unique student to obtain their education whether it be through a general classroom, a special day school, a residential facility, or full-inclusion. Equality is met in this way.
