    In 1971 the first court case regarding students with exceptionalities in schools was taken to court due to the Pennsylvania law that excludes students with disabilities from public education. The case was quickly settled with the decision to provide ALL a free public education. This case became the basis for protecting students with disabilities.

  • Mills v. Board of Education of the District of Columbia

    Mills v. Board of Education of the District of Columbia
    This case expanded the decisions made in the Pennsylvania case. The case was brought by 7 children who were denied equal education due to disability. The decision was that the schools were not to withhold education from anyone regardless of disability and that there is no excuse for not providing equal education.

    The Education for All Handicapped Children Act
    in 1975 The Education for All Handicapped Children Act was enacted. This law requires that all schools that receive federal funding provide equal education to all regardless of race, religion, gender, or disability.
  • The Handicapped Children’s Protection Act

    The Handicapped Children’s Protection Act
    This law was created to give things not covered by the EHA. This included funds to assist parents of children with disabilities in fighting legal battles. This covered fees of parents challenging schools on equal rights for kids with disabilities.
  • The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act

    The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act
    The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act or IDEA is a law that provides free and APPROPRIATE education to all. This law provides accommodations if needed for students based on their disabilities. This also gives students an IEP or an individualized plan for students with exceptionalities.

    In 1991 The Americans with disabilities act which is a civil rights law was created. The ADA prohibits discrimination based on disability. The ADA also requires employers and schools to provide accommodations for those with disabilities.
  • The Assistive Technology Act

    The Assistive Technology Act
    This law was provided to give students with disabilities access to technology used in classrooms. This provides accommodations to technology that students with disabilities are able to use.
  • No child left behind

    No child left behind
    The no child left behind act is an act that provides federal education programs that hold schools responsible for student progress. NCLB places importance on ensuring all students get the necessary things they need to learn.
