  • Sharecropping

    Sharecropping started, it had pros and cons. Slavery was over but most former slaves couldn't afford to buy land, so they would rent it. The families that would rent the land would have to give a portion of their crops to the owner of the land. Later this process started to fail because the renters would always have enough crop for the landowners. Sharecropping ended in the 1970s.
  • Great Migration

    The Great Migration is began to happen and music from the south started to spread to the north. Millions of black southerners migrated to larger cities because they wanted a better life.
  • Chuck berry was born

    He was born in st. louis missouri, a very segregated city. He started playing guitar and singing in high school.
  • Blues began

    Blues began to become a little bit more popular. Charley Patton was sung Bo Weevil in 1929. In the 50s and 60s the blues became a popular type of music.

  • Muddy Waters reccords first song

    Muddy Waters recorded his first song in Mississippi. Muddy Water began to become more popular in music's history. Lawrence's Great Migration series started in 1940 and ended in 1941
  • Race records changed names

    Race Records changes their name to “Rhythm & Blues” because many radio stations wouldn't play their songs because the singers were black and the listeners were white.
  • Elvis Presley premiered on the Milton Berele show

    Elvis Presley premiered on the Milton Berele show. This was a great accomplishment for younger musicians. This show gained him fame and people really began to love him and his music.
  • Sun Records was founded by Sam Phillips

    Sun Records was founded by Sam Phillips in Memphis, Tennessee. Sun Records discovered many African-Americans with talent and recorded their songs. Sun Records was looking for blacks and whites artists with talent. Of course if you were black the whites listeners probably wouldn't buy your music.
  • Chuck Berry meets Muddy Waters

    Muddy Waters told Chuck Berry to talk with Chess Records. Five years later he recorded Maybellene. Maybellene had a blues beat and had a little country in it, also it had some narrative storytelling
  • Sam Phillips meets Elvis Presley

    Sam Phillips meets Elvis Presley and loves his voice. Elvis made Sun Records famous because he was a white man that had the voice of a black man.
  • U.S Supreme court decision

    blacks and whites were allowed to go to the same schools. In 1957 the governor of Arkansas told the National Guard to come to a high school to “preserve the peace”.
  • Sun records played Elvises song

    Sun records became the first disc jockey in the country to play the song “That’s all right” by Elvis Presley. A radio station loved his song and wanted to interview Elvis. The radio station thought Elvis was black but when he interviewed him and the viewer found out he was white, the phones started ringing!
  • Pre-civil rights era

    Many things were going on around the 1958. Civil right activist were fighting for their rights. There were bus boycotts and marches to show that blacks were equal; it was a violent time. This was all going on while Chuck Berry preformed Johnny B. Goode.
