  • Post Civil War

    The period immediatley following the civil war. Music reflected sentiments that were meant to communicate the civil war during reconstruction. Link text
  • The Great Migration

    The movement of African Americans from the rural south to the north. More of a soul/jazz sound was introduced into the current of mainstream music. Link text
  • Prohibition

    The constitutional ban on the production, importation and sale of alcohol beverages in the United States. The creation of speakeasies spurred an attitude that was fun, daring and exciting, so jazz came in to "set the mood".
  • The Great Depression

    A worldwide economic depression. Now known as "swing", jazz became very popular. (Was as popular as it ever got.) Link text
  • WWII

    A national war. With the invention of the radio the popular music, which was banned around the world, held themes of liberation and freedom. Link text
  • Civil Rights Movement

    Social movements to accomplish the goal of ending racial segregation and discrimination. This mobilized and gave a voice to the civil rights movement. Link text
  • Veitnam War

    A war that took place in Veitnam and included combatants from many different countires. The music became a protesting voice, and spread the cause for peace rapidly. Link text
  • *1960s Counter Culture*

    The introduction of the counter culture, which included loose morals, anti war ideas and an overwhelming use of psychedelic drugs. Influenced sound and meaning in music, which they used to give the counter culture a voice. Link text
  • Internet

    A global system of interconnected computer networks that use internet protocol suite to link billions of devices worldwide. Any kind of music instantly available and able to spread. Link text
  • Invention of the I-pod

    The invention and realeasing of the technological device called an "I-pod". People can put music on it and listen to it anywhere. Link text
  • Social Media

    Online tools and services that allow people to create, share or find ideas easily. Allows music to be easily shared to a very wide audience. Link text
