  • Henry Fox-Talbot

    Fox-Talbot made images with "mousetrap" like boxes on light sensitive paper and called his images Calotypes, he did not release his discoveries until 1839.

    Daguerre released his formula for making images to the government so that people could make them on their own without any patent restrictions.

    The Two Ways of Life created
    Oscar Rejlander created a tableaux vivant that greatly demonstrated what creativity could be brought to photography and was exhibited at the Manchester Art Treasures Exhibition.

    Stereoscopic images had a 3D effect by placing two simular images in front of two lenses. Not unlike 3D images are made today by placing two cameras on a subject at slightly different angles. The idea of putting two images together in this way was thought of long before the idea of photography, but became popular around this time.

    Many photos were taken of the war, namely portraits of soldiers for their family members, dead bodies and battlefields. The graphic pictures sold well in america but also condured up great controversy. They depicted a more accurate representation of war, but were suggested not to be seen by women and children.

    Charles Darwin uses photos in his research studying human emotions. He hired photographer Oscar Rejander to make portraits of people smiling, laughing and frowning to use for his book.
