    They were designed with faster CPUs. Multiprogramming was invented

    It improved the cost/perfomance ratio of computer components. The concep of firmware was born to give name to new functions the operating systems needed. Multiprocessing was created.

    The computers started to need a networking capability. A lot of mulmedia applications were introduced.

    The sixth generation of computers
    The need for operating systems to offer improved reliability, flexiblity and speed was emphasized. Virtualization was createad to meet this types of requirements
