  • The First Step of Change

    The First Step of Change
    Moses "Fleetwood' Walker becomes the first African-American to sign in major league baseball contract. Despite breaking this barrier he never played in a major league game. Moses along with several other African-American players floated around the minor leagues.
  • The First Black Team

    The First Black Team
    The Cuban Giants become the first black professional baseball team. They would play as an independent ball club until the organization of the first black league in 1920.
  • The Begining

    The first attempt at creating a professional negro baseball league consisted of eight teams, but failed within two weeks due to lack of attendance.
  • The Ban

    African-Americans are banned from major league baseball; this ban continued until 1946.
  • Plessy vs. Furgeson

    The Lousiana separate but equal law was upheld by the supreme court.
  • Page and Cuban Giants play in the negro national championship

    The two baseball clubs play an historic game series that became the national championship series. The Page Fence Club won 10 of the 15 games.
  • Official creation of the Negro Baseball League

    The season starts with the Chicago Giants, Dayton Marcos, Detroit Stars, Indianapolis ABC's, Kansas City Monarchs, and the Cuban Stars.
  • The Eastern Colored League was created

    This included six teams and was different from the southern league
  • The First Negro World Series

    The First Negro World Series
    The first Negro World Series is played between the Kansas City Monarchs and the Hilldale Club. The Monarchs wins the series five games to four.
  • A New League

    The American Negro League is formed in the east and begins its first and only season.
  • Problems Arise

    Eastern Colored League disbands midseason.
  • The Great Depression

    The Great Depression
    The stock market crashes and puts financial pressure on the American economy.
  • The End of a League

    The Kansas City Monarchs return to independent play and later that year the Negro National League plays the final season due to financial pressures.
  • Only One Left Standing

    The Negro Southern League is the only Negro League left in operation.
  • Moving Forward

    A new Negro National League is formed.
  • A Failed Attempt

    A new East-West League attempted to rebound after the fall of the Eastern League but failed to complete a season.
  • A New League

    The Negro-American League is formed, the NAL begins its first season with seven of the best teams from several leagues.
  • Breaking Molds

    Breaking Molds
    Jackie Robinson is the National league Rookie of the Year in the same season he breaks the color barrier.
  • A Step into the Major League

    A Step into the Major League
    Jackie Robinson signs with the Brooklyn Dodgers.
  • The first of many

    Larry Doby and Jackie Robinson sign contracts with American and National League teams
  • Who is Still Left?

    The Negro-American League is the only Negro league still in operation.
  • An Era Coming to an End

    150 Negro-League players have been integrated into Major League Baseball. Without many of its greatest players the Great Negro Baseball Era comes to a close.

    Fences, an American play by August Wilson, is published in 1983. This play takes place in the 1950's and explores the evolving experience of African-Americans in baseball.
