Early Music Video's.
In 1926, with the arrival of "talkies" many musical short films were produced. Some examples of these were 'St Louis Blues' and 'The Jazz Singer'. -
Promotinal Clips.
Developed in France, 'visual dukeboxes' were created to allow artists to record short films accompanying their songs that were then distrubuted globally to machines such as the 'Cinebox'. Audiences could then view these music videos from this. -
Music Video's and Television
In Australia, programmes such as 'Countdown' and 'Sounds' (1974) were both dedicated to showing footage of popular songs. Similarly, the UK had a show called 'Top of The Pops' which would air a mixture of live preformances and music videos to the public on a weekly basis. -
Bohemian Rhapsody
This music video was considered one of the first. 'Queen' were unable to make the show 'Top of The Pops' so produced a music video to play instead. -
MTV
'Music television' was founded in 1981. This was a TV programme which allowed artists to show a visual production along with their song. This was an important moment in the history of music videos because MTV was a whole channel dedicated to showing music videos 24/7. Therefore, artists saw the opportunity to increase exposure of their music so created music videos to be played. -
MTV Music Video's
Some of the first music video's on MTV were 'Video Killed The Radio Star" by The Buggles and 'You Better Run' by Pat Benatar. -
Michael Jackson - Thriller
This music video is worth mentioning in the history of music videos due to it's 14 minute long running time, dance routines and costumes which all lead to this iconic, feature film-like music video. It's use of an elaborate and high concept plot inspired artists to incorperate storylines into their music video's. -
Music Video Directors.
During this time, directors began to become a necessary part of music video making. This demonstrates the fact that music videos weren't just used to promote artists music. Music videos were now small films which complimented the song and were used to entertain the audience. Directors included Chris Cunningham, Michel Gondry and Spike Jonze. -
The Internet
In 1991 the internet was made available for public use. However, at this time accessing and watching music videos through the internet to watch was extremely difficult or impossible for the average person to do. Despite this, the internet's progression and improvement over time lead to the creation of websites such as youtube.com. In 2005, video sharing website 'Youtube' enabled music videos to be uploaded to the intenet. This meant people could watch music videos whenever they pleased. -
Current Music Video's.
Presently, music videos can be streamed via the internet as well as be watched on television and even be downloaded to portable devices such as an ipod or tablet. Music video's are now not just used to entertain an audience, they are commonly used to promote products by featuring them in popular artists videos. For example, the 'Beats Pill' speaker is heavily advertised in Nicki Minaj's music video's such as 'Anaconda' and 'Pills and Potions'.
