    One of the first examples of a music video is a song by Bessie Smith in the film 'St Louis Blue' although other people from the film feature its still an important milestone in the making of music videos. This was the first type of music video and the idea is similar to the idea of music videos nowadays too promote and market them.

    1950's
    The early 1950's is when music videos really began to be recognised. In 1956 Tony Bennett was filmed walking through London while a recording of the song 'Stranger in paradise' played in the background. He therefore claimed to have made the first ever music video.

    The Jackson were a very successful pop group and in the 1970's music videos changed and emphasised the artists singing through the editing technique 'Cross-cutting'. The cross cutting switched between the video narrative to the artist singing this shows the importance of editing in creating a proliferating music video and using aa range of techniques including techniques such as 'Chroma key' to make the video more successful.

    'Thriller' By Michael Jackson was the most successful music video ever and was first shown on MTV on the 2nd of December 1983 however wasn't released as a single until January 1984. The video included on of Michael Jacksons most famous dance moves the 'Moon walk' and is iconic red leather suit. The narrative of the film shoes Michael and girl being chased by zombies and also explores the idea's of werewolves, the video was a huge success with audiences worldwide but was criticised as too violent

    'Girls Just wanna Have Fun' By Cyndi Lauper won the first ever award for the Best Female Music Video in 1984. Cyndi Laupers version of the song was released in 1983 and was extremely popular worldwide throughout the year into early 1984. The single was also number two on US Billboard hot 100. The video was hugely successful and became a song representing feminism

    'Scream' By Michael And Janet Jackson was shot primarily in black and white and was the most expensive music video ever made with the production costing £7 million pounds. The video was released on the 31st of May in 1995 and was suggested to be on of the craziest video's of its time and is set in space. This shows how making and extravagant video and adding a surreal setting can make the video stand out and make it memorable which could generate further success with the demographic.

    'Hit me baby one more time' by Britney Spears was released in the late 90's and was very controversial compared to the 'out there' videos of the early 90's. More explicit videos were being produced and the single 'Hit me baby one more time' pushed the boundaries focussing on topics that before would've been seen as 'taboo' for example the male gaze and sexuality. This could have increased proliferation as it shocked the demographic. This is similar to Miley Cyrus and her video wrecking ball.

    Before YouTube most Videos were shown on TV through shows such as Top Of The Pops however in 2005 the way Music videos were exhibited and the way audiences consumed them was revolutionised by Youtube. Youtube enabled the demographic to watch the official music videos of all their favourite sings and bands easily as many times as they wanted. It also changed the marketing of videos as artist could post them for free for example Baby (Justin bieber) got over 1 billion views on Youtube.

    Spotify was the introduction of streaming music, it was founded in Swoon in 2006. Spotify has changed the way audiences consume music therefore also changed the way it is produced for example now many songs a released before the music video e.g. Calvin Harris 'This is what you came for' was released a week before the video.

    'Single Ladies' a hit by Beyoncé was released in 2008 on her third album and was named on of the best songs of the year. One factor in the songs success was the iconic lyrics and the topics it explored as they had never been brought to light before in music videos. The video was filmed in black and white and featured iconic dance moves that were popular with a large demographic.

The artist is from South Korea and proves that having an immersive video that has its own unique dance moves highly increases a videos proliferation within the demographic and increases sales. The single had over 1 billion views on Youtube in a 159 days and currently has 2.5 billion views. Additionally adding a comedy element highly increases the success of a video

    'Fancy' by Iggy Azalea was released in February 2014 and the narrative of the music video directly links to the film 'Clueless' which is popular romantic comedy amongst teens demonstrating how linking to a key demographic can help the success of a video. Iggy Azalea is a female rap artist which is quite a modern concept as in the past women weren't seen in the rap music genre the same way as men. The single was described as 'Electro hop' again highlighting how music genre's evolve over time.

This highlights the evolution of music videos and how the development of digital technology has changed the production of videos as there is now more technology/VFX involved to create a proliferating video.
