    The NHL began and formed. This allowed for hockey teams to form and began to play each other in a league. This has changed hockey forever because the NHL (National Hockey League) is still around today for the world of hockey.

    Goal Tenders Begin to Play the Puck
    In 1921, goal tenders began to be able to play the puck. One of the first goal tenders to do this was Jacques Plante. It has changed hockey forever because if goal tenders weren't allowed to do this then it would make their job much more difficult. This has changed how hockey has been played.

  • First NHL All Star Game

    On October 13th, 1947, the first NHL All Star game was held on Canadian Thanksgiving against the Stanley cup champions the Maple Leafs. The All Stars won the game showing that they were worth something and that the Maple Leafs didn't win all the time. It was also the very first annual game.

    The Hockey Stick Curves
    Sometime during the late 1950's, the hockey stick began to evolve to allow players to make unpredictable slap shots. Andy Bathgate and Stan Mikita were the first to physically bend their old sticks to make better angles of shots. Those two helped create the idea. This has changed hockey forever because now they can make better angled shots and it made the game unpredictable with these new angles tricking goal keepers.

    Hockey Appeared on National Television
    On January 11th, 1958, the game of the Canadiens vs the Rangers appeared on National Television. The score was nine to three with the Canadiens winning. This changed hockey forever because now people didn't have to buy tickets to see their hockey team play. If they had a t.v. at home they could tune in and watch the game making it easier to see.

    Goal Keepers Now Wear Masks
    On November 1st, 1959 goal keepers take a safety preventative and wear masks regularly.This has prevented future shattered faces, broken teeth, injuries, stitches, and deaths. Jacques Plante was one of the first to do this regularly.

  • Helmets Required

    On June 1st, 1979, the President of NHL John Ziegler declared that all players entering the NHL should be required to wear a protective helmet. This changed hockey because it made it much safer for the player since they now were all wearing helmets.

    Winter Olympics Lake Placid 1980
    In the 1980 Olympics, USA played the Soviets. For the hockey medal the Soviets were favored to win. A few weeks before this game, USA and the Soviets had played each other and the Soviets smashed them in the game. Although in this game at the Olympics, USA kept up with the Soviets and won. This changed the world's outlook on American hockey and that the Scviets didn't always win as they were used to. This allowed new
    champions in the world of hockey.

  • NHL Mandates Netting

    NHL Mandates Netting
    On March, 19th, 2002 Brittanie Cecil attended a Columbus Blue Jacket's game and was killed by a hockey puck. She was the first spectator to die. Because of this, Gary Bettman (NHL commissioner) mandated that all NHL teams install netting above glass that borders the corners and the end zone. This has created a safer environment for fans.

    In the hockey season of 2004-2005, hockey players were locked out and there were no games for the whole season. This changed hockey forever because when all the players came back from their miniature barred period they were better than ever in the 2005-2006 season
