Skinner was a psychologist, that developed a theory of operant conditioning. His book, Science and Human Behavior,was about this theory, and was very influential to education. -
Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka
The Supreme court made a decision, and announced that segregated schools would from then on be illegal. This was a first step to equality within the school system. -
Little Rock Nine
The Arkansas school board came up with a plan to slowly integrate their schools after the Brown v. Board case. This resulted in a group of nine African Americans enrolling into an originally all-white school in 1957. This event caused an uproar from the white students and the community. The brave students were Melba Pattillo Beals, Minnijean Brown, Elizabeth Eckford, Ernest Green, Gloria Ray Karlmark, Carlotta Walls LaNier, Thelma Mothershed, Terrence Roberts, and Jefferson Thomas. -
National Defense Education Act (NDEA)
After the Soviet Union launched Sputnik in 1957, Americans started to realize the importance of science and mathematics. This lead to the passage of NDEA, which increased the funds for those subjects and also foreign language. -
The First ACT
The first ACT was administered. This is a non-profit organization designed to help students achieve success. -
Engel v. Vitale
This case ruled that students being required to recite a prayer in school was unconstitutional. This went against the First Amendment. -
First Bilingual & Bicultural Public School
After the Cuban Revolution, there was a large amount of Cuban immigrants in Miami, Florida. This lead to Coral Way Elementary making it the first bilingual and bicultural school in the US. -
Head Start
The Head Start program started in 1965 as a preschool program for low income families. This is the longest running anti-poverty program in the US. -
Title IX
This law prohibited discrimination in education based on sex. Many people associated this mainly with girls or women participating in sports. -
James Banks
James Banks was an educator that believed in promoting multicultural education. He is known as the "father of multicultural education". He even wrote a book which was, Multicultural Education: Transformation Knowledge and Action.
