History of Computer Games

  • SpaceWar!

    The first ever game designed to be played on a computer, SpaceWar! was a two player game which involved trying to kill the other player, while trying to avoid being sucked into a star in the middle.
  • Computer Space

    Computer Space was the first commercial arcade game. Created by Nolan Bushnell, this game was a remake of SpaceWar!, and was quite popular.
  • Pong

    This was the first really popular aracde game, and commonly(but wrongly) known as the first computer game. Pong was also made by Nolan Bushnell, who in the same year went on to found Atari.
  • Odyssey

    The Odyssey was the first ever game console released for home use. It was manufactured by Magnavox, and, with a series of adverts starring Frank Sinatra, sold 100,000 copies in the first year.
  • Lunar Lander

    Lunar Lander,by Atari, was one of the first computer games ever copyrighted by a country.
  • Pacman

    Pacman was the first ever maze game, but also became one of the most famous games ever.
  • Zork

    Zork was one of the first ever adventure games, which used the system of text to make the game work.
  • Donkey Kong

    Donkey Kong was the first ever proper platformer, which ledto the hugely succesful franchise of Mario.
  • Turbo

    Turbo, by Sega, was the first racing gtamewith a third person perspective.
  • Legend of Zelda

    Legend of Zelda was the first ever real Action Adventure game, which combined lots of the best bits from different genres.
  • Metal Gear

    Metal Gear was the first proper Stealth game ever,leading to the hugely popular Metal Gear series.
  • Dune II

    Dune II was the first ever game to fall under the mo0dern day category of RTS, or real time strategy.
  • MineCraft

    Minecraft is a game made my a single man, known as Notch. Still in production, if you buy the game, you get free updates. It is essentially a survival sandbox game,but with so much to do. It is one of the most widely followed games worldwide. It is produced by the company Mojang AB.
  • Gran Turismo 5

    Gran Turismo 5 (more commonly known as GT5), is the highest standard of computer graphics in modern times. The 10th or so installment in the series, GT5 includes over 1000 cars, 71 tracks, and 26 different locations. it is the ultimate in modern computer gaming.
