History of Canadian Peacekeeping

  • Sinai

    Sinai
UN forces were sent into the SInai Peninsula after the Israelis and Egyptians signied a peace treaty. The reason troops were sent in on the ground was to ensure that both sides kept their part of the deal. Canada spent 13 billion on military support which historically wil be considered a small amount of money.
  • Namibia

    Namibia
The UNTAG were sent to Naminia to help with the peace process and the elections because the UN proposed a plan to ceasefire but only two parties agreed. Canada spent 17 billion dollars on its military budget, which is again an increase. At this time Canada's was ranked 5th in peacekeeping suppot. We had the dollars and we were a big player.
  • Cambodia , Somalis and Croatia

    Cambodia , Somalis and Croatia
The UNTAC was a task force sent into Cambodia. This was the fThis was the first time in UN history where they took over the country and helped them form an election and an independent state. Canada's military budget was 17 Billion which did not change for the past few years however Canada's ranking increased to the second position for worldwide support. Canada did not have to increase its budget to support more peacekeeping missions. The 2700 troops were effective.
  • Rwanda, Haiti

    Rwanda, Haiti
Romeo Dellaire, along with other peacekeepers were sent into Rwanda to soften the situation between the minority Tutsi and the majority Hutu. The mission failed as over 1 million Tutsi's were executed by machetes. Canada spent fewer dollars on ts military during these years, 16 billion and its ranking fell to 6th. Is there a correlation between dollars spent and world ranking? Let's see what the future holds.
  • Haiti , Herzegovenia, African Republic

    Haiti , Herzegovenia, African Republic
This UN mission lasted for 3 years because the peacekeepers did their obs. The mission re-establshed again in 2004 after some rebels took over the government when the president resigned. Canada 's millitary spending dropped again to 14 billion and it ranked 20th overall. Canada only sent in 900 troops. That is 2/3 less than in 1992. Hmm...a trend is forming!
  • Kosovo, Eritrea

    Kosovo, Eritrea
The UNMIK was sent into Kosovo for the sole purpose of to ensure the citizens a peaceful life. The UNMIK still exsists today but only has little control as Kosovo became independent. Canada slightly increases it military budget to 15 billion however their ranking nosedived to 30th place. Are their 300 troops being effective?
  • Sudan, Haiti

    Sudan, Haiti
Canada increased its military budget again to 16 billion but these dollars didnt help their ranking which fell again to 41st overall. But wow! only 200 troops were sent in. What kind of effect can this little amount of support be? Military budgets must be used for other things It is ow post 911 and Canada is looking out for its own safety.
  • Darfur, Sudan

    Darfur, Sudan
Canada is back to an increased budget of 17 billion dollars. This increase should push us up in the ranking but we are at an all time low of 61st overall. Our military personnel have also increased but why are we struggling wiht our ranking? Is our military just their for show or are we capable of making a significant contribution?
  • The Pesent Time

Between 1956 and 1992, Canada was consideed one of the largest contributors in Peacekeeping. Today, Canada is ranked 67th and only has 11 militaty personnel and 116 police officers participating in Peacekeeping missions. What is amazing also is that our military budget has skyrocketed to 23 billion dollars Canada is spending more money on protecting its own borders and citizens. While this is good for Canadians, how is the rest of the world looking at us? Our boy scout reputation is tarnished.
