    Salamis tablet

This counting tablet was followed by the Roman and Greek counting tool.
  • Period: 300 to 500 BCE

    Abaci

Abacus were used thousands of years ago in China. There is some disagreements that the babylonians may have invented the abacus before the Chinese by two hundred years. The Abacus became the first type of calculator.
  • Period: 1550 to

    Johne Neper

Neper created a device useful for multiplication. It consisted of rods and only gave approximation. He also invented logarithms.
  • The first mechanical Calculator

The first mechanical calculator was developed by Blaise Pascal. He build several versions but most of he machines were unreliable.
  • Charles Babbage

Charles Babbage created improved Pascals machines and built the calculator in 1695.
  • Period: to

    WWII

In World War II John Vincent and Clifford E. Berry created an electronic digital computer. This was inspired for the need to break codes during the war. However, these two individuals were not successful.

    First working electric computer

    J. Presper Exkert and John W. Mauchly created the first working electrical computer. The computer was created at University of Pennsylvania. The first working computer took the name ENIAC (Electronic Numerical Integrator and Calculator).
  • ENIAC

The computer was 30ft X 50ft. It weight about 30 tons and had 1800 vacuum tubes. The cost of the machine was about $487,000. Due to the amount of heat that the machine generated the room had to be monitored of temperature and humidity level.
  • UNIVAC I

Very similar to the ENIAC, but this machine could handle alphabetic and numerical data.
  • Supercomputer

The first supercomputer was created by Seymour Cray. This computer could handle about 10 million instructions per second.

    Advancements of Computers

  • ATLAS

The Computer was built in University of Manchester. The computer was operational in 1962. this computer was considered to be the first supercomputer. The ATLAS brought leading hardware tools together. This also pushed the advancement of architectural improvements.
  • Personal Computers

  • Altair 8800

Designed by Ed Roberts and Forrest M. Mims III. The computer was built around the Intel 8080 and designed. The computer was first successful as a home computer.
  • Microsoft

Paul Allen and Bill Gates develop a version of BASIC for the Altair 8800. They also established a company called Micro Soft.
  • Apple I

The first Apple Computer developed and sold by Steve Wozniak. The computer had an 8-bit microprocessor.
