    Queen Liliuokalani is Overthrown
    Queen Liliuokalani was overthrown by 160 U.S. sailors and marines and they set up a new government headed by Sanford P. Dole.
    We were able to obtain the islands of Hawaii after we overthrew Liliuokalani.
  • Explosion of the U.S.S. Maine

    Explosion of the U.S.S. Maine
    The U.S.S. Maine was an American warship that was docked in the harbor of Havana to bring home American citizens who were in danger fro the war. It exploded and more than 260 men were killed.
    It was the event that brought us into the Spanish-American War.
  • War is Declared on Spain

    War is Declared on Spain
    America declared war on Spain after the explosion of the U.S.S. Maine in Havana. It's important because we won the war and claimed new lands as a result of the war.
  • Boxer Rebellion

    Boxer Rebellion
    The Boxer Rebellion was where a bunch of martial artists who were against foreigners attacked and killed hundreds of foreigners. It's important because it took troops from 5 countries to put down the rebellion.
  • 1902 Coal Strike

    1902 Coal Strike
    140,000 miners went on stike demanding higher wages and a 9 hour workday and the right to organize a union in Pennsylvania. This was the first incidence where the federal government intervened as a neutral arbitrator.
  • Platt Amendment is Ratified

    Platt Amendment is Ratified
    The Platt Amendment was accepted by a vote in 1902 in Cuba with a vote of 16-11. It restricted Cuba in the conduct of foreign policy and commercial trade. It's important to me because it was this sort of bullying behavior that we fought for our independence from Britain.

    Pure Food & Drug Act
    The Pure Food & Drug Act halted the sale of contaminated food and medicine and also called for truth in labeling. Before it was passed, many manufacturers had been putting illegal drugs and alcohol in children's medicine.
    Importance: people wanted to know what was being put into the food they were eating

    Franz Ferdinand is Assassinated
    Franz Ferdinand was assassinated by Gavrilo Princip in Sarajevo.
    It was the event that made WW1 inevitable.
  • Austria-Hungary Declares war on Serbia

    Austria-Hungary Declares war on Serbia
    Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia afetr Gavrilo Princip assassinated the heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo.
    It was this declaration of war that brough Russia into the war due to Russia's alliance with Serbia and brought all the other countries into the war because of their alliances.

    Germany invaded Belgium to be able to get into France as is called for in the Schlieffen Plan.
    They were the first shots fired during the war which is why they're important.

    Panama Canal Opens
    The Panama Canal was completed by the U.S. after being started by the French in the late 1800's.
    It shortened the route to the Pacific Ocean by allowing ships to pass through Panama instead of going around the Southern most tip of South Amrica.
  • Clayton Antitrust Act is Passed

    Clayton Antitrust Act is Passed
    The Clayton Antitrust Act was the 1st of two major antitrust measures that sought to strngthen the Sherman Antitrust Act of 1890. The Clayton Antitrust Act prohibited corporations from aquiring stock of another company if doing so would create a monopoly.
    Importance: people didn't want to have one giant company controlling the prices on items that people wanted/needed.
  • Sinking of the Lusitania

    Sinking of the Lusitania
    The Lusitania was a Brtish liner that was torpedoed off the southern coast of Ireland.
    128 Americans were killed in the sinking and public opinion began to favor going to war against Germany.

    Treaty of Versailles
    The Treaty of Versailles was a treaty made after the end of WW1. It estabished 9 new nations and made Germany take sole responsibility for the war and pay billions in reparations.
    It was because of this treatment of Germany that WW2 broke out.

    Prohibition was a policy in which the sale, production, and use of alcohol was prohibited.
    Importance; people wanted to improve their lives and they tried to by banning alcohol.
