    This bill aimed to outlaw slavery in territories taken from Mexico. The bill passed in the House of Representatives but was defeated in the Senate thus causing a division in congress. Although, not a success it led to the formation of the Free Soil Party.

  • Compromise of 1850

    This was a series of Congressional laws intended to settle the major disagreements between free states and slave states. Douglas succeeded and this plan is now known as the compromise of 1850.
  • The Kansas Nebraska Act

    This law was made in 1854 and it established the territories of Kansas and Nebraska and gave their residence the right to decide wheather to go with slavery or not.
  • Bleeding Kansas

    Proslavery and Antislavery settlers rushed into the kansas territory to vote for the territorial legislature.

    One of the most vioent historical events. Representative Preston Brooks attacked senator Charles Sumner. They beat eachother and Sumner almost died.
  • Dried Scott vs. Sandford

    This reached the supreme court in 1856. In 1857, the court ruled against Scott.
  • Attack on Harpers Ferry

    John Brown, the man who murdered proslavery people had a plan. He wanted to make sure slaves fought for freedom, by doing so he planned to take all the US.
